Apparently the chemical used to detect CO has water in it, which evaporates. Traditional CO detectors last about 7-8 years. The Nest Protect lasts 10 years and sends you a message (email I think) when its time to replace it. No annoying beeping.
Its an electrochemical sensor. It’s water based. More info than anyone probably wanted to know.
