Hey my soon to be h.s. son loves his bathrobe! Unfortunately, it’s his robe from 4th grade and he tends to run around the house in it a la WildChild/Hugh Hefner rather than actually use it anywhere near a bathroom.

And no, it doesn’t remotely still fit him. Must be a security blankie thing.

When I went to college, I spent huge amounts of time in my bathrobe. I would shower and wash my hair fairly early in the evening (by which I mean about 11 pm rather than after midnight) to give my long hair time to dry (hair dryers couldn’t be used because they blew the fuses), and then I would wear my bathrobe for the rest of the evening until I went to bed.

One of my suitemates had a male friend who used to walk home with her from the library almost every evening around midnight and stop in and talk with all of us in our suite for a while before going to his own room. I never worried about him seeing me in my bathrobe because it was a very modest, full-length style.

One day, after seeing this guy almost every night for about two years, I happened to run into him in the daytime on campus. His remark: “Marian, is that you? I almost didn’t recognize you with your clothes on.”

It was at this point that I reconsidered the use of the bathrobe.

Anyone (male) use the terrycloth toga thing that snaps at the waist?

S informed me that the dorm bathroom itself is co-ed. Been there, done that, but it was in the late 1960’s and for weekends only. Besides the dorm only had one per hall. No solid stall doors.

great lakes mom–Not all girls use(d) robes (or even close).

Reading this, I’m figuring bathrobes are a lost cause. We found something highly discounted at Old Navy, and I talked her into it, so no big deal. She’s going to a rather creative school where I know the students are not bound by convention. I just thought it was what most people did in this culture. Personally, I hate bathrobes. Can’t get anything done while wearing one, and I’d far prefer to lounge in jeans or exercise clothes, should the opportunity present.

Speaking of lost causes-- are full-length bathrobes even sold in stores anymore? I found some online, but they’re way out of my budget. Am I wasting my time with this? Thanks.

My D will probably use one, not for modesty, but for warmth, it can be cold after a shower in the winter in NYC, so having something warm to immediately cuddle up in

I wore one piece jammies in college, with feet, yes I did, and they were fun…

As I sit here, wrapped in my full-length bathrobe (fleece) after taking the dogs out in the middle of the night (it’s 1 AM)… yes, they still sell bathrobes. Lands End has some nice ones. I got the really ugly, really cheap one I’m wearing from travelsmith.com on sale (it’s warm and waterproof, essential for taking dogs out in our lovely winter weather) (right now it’s not actually raining though). And Victoria’s Secret has some too, check their sales.

And I’m not the only one in my neighborhood who wears a bathrobe, I see other neighbors out there in bathrobes getting the newspaper. Although sweat pants seem to be more popular with the guys.

IdMom, I laughed when I read your post, because my soon to be HS son LOVES his bathrobe, too! Its a Lands End polartec that he’s very quickly outgrowing, and I would no more throw it out than throw out his blankie. (when he was 3)…His friends do make cracks about it when they come to sleep over but he could care less. He loves that thing! haha

All three of my kids (2 Ss, 1 D) use bathrobes. Can’t remember which S, but had to go buy him one because he kept stealing H’s. Actually, I think I bought H a new one. It started young - we used to have a lot of foster kids coming and going, and for various reasons had to emphasize modesty and privacy at home.

I know both S’s took their bathrobes to college, but I have no knowledge if they used it.

Regarding the “recognize you with your clothes on”- that’s a standard comment for people used to seeing each other only in O.R. scrubs at work when they run into each other at a store.

Bathrobes in the dorms? If it’s co-ed and you add a pipe you might be on to something. Otherwise I don’t believe I’ve ever heard of anyone using one. One guy did go totally nude a couple times though.
