Coffee people, educate me about coffee makers, please

I lived in Zurich during the late 80s and early 90s. Fancy espresso machines were standard equipment in almost every home. (By espresso, I mean coffee made by forcing steam through the coffee grounds–it was not as strong as italian espresso.) Even the vending machine in the building where I worked served up espresso made with beans that were freshly ground after you inserted money and pressed the button.

I went back for a visit last summer and was surprised to find a Starbucks on almost every other corner.
