My son goes to a school where doing research in local colleges is not only common but expected for kids in the research track. But this must be very school and location-specific. Cold emailing may help, but some of my son’s friends sent out dozens of emails (with their resumes) before getting any response. They were expected to have at least some research experience before applying. Some of his friends who had a specific lab in mind followed the profs on social media, went to their talks, and spoke to them afterwards. One got an interview offer on the spot even though he got no response to his email. Having their teachers reach out directly to recommend the student has helped many, but their teachers do have relationships with many local colleges. I would maybe start by asking your teachers if they can suggest any leads. It doesn’t have to be a college lab either. My kid joined a local community bio lab last year (as a sophomore) which was open to anyone. He took several workshops there, which helped him gain the skills, build his resume, and ultimately get a lab position at a local college.
