Coldest Schools In America?

Cold weather also knocks out allergens, so if you’ve got airborne allergies, head north. The freeze kills them. And you might become the lucky owner of a block heater for your car’s engine, depending on where you are.

D2 is considering the following schools:

Bates

Bowdoin

Hamilton

U Rochester

Union

Syracuse

I know they’re all cold, but colder than western Mass?
(Marginally colder would be ok.)

Is Colgate too cold? Colder than Vassar?

The farther from water, the colder and the less snow you recieve and vice versa. Wisoncsin is cold, they go under 0 about 15 times a year i think. Average winter temperatures are around 20-24 for highs and 7-10 for lows and they get 43"of snow on average, but it is usually a cycle were a few years are 30" and the next few years or around 60"

Bump… a lot of teh schools I am looking at are also on nyc’s list. anyone know anything on how cold it gets?

god…I’m from Hong Kong and have NEVER seen snow yet I’m applying for Wisconsin! am I trying to kill myself?!

Northwestern is FREEZING. An ocean might keep things temperate, but a Great Lake? I read (as in, don’t know for certain) that the students have to wear two or three sweatshirts, with sweatpants under their jeans. Brrr!

The number of days it is really cold in Madison and Chicago–below 10 degress during the day if typically a handful. All you really need is a good down coat, gloves, and earmuffs or a hat. I never wore anything but jeans and never froze. The last few years have seen virtually no days that were even that cold. But it’s not warm and you need to be ready come December through February. Luckily school at UW is closed from before Christmas through late January.–often the coldest month.

I’m laughing my head off - reminds me of my college roommate from Atlanta who showed up in Michigan freshman year with a little short wool pea coat…no gloves, no boots, no hat. Too funny. By the way, I hear that the kids at Michigan Tech up in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan have to wear goggles to get across campus in the winter because it is so frigid and the snow is blowing so hard…and jeans do get awfully cold next to your skin in the winter.

My roommate from LA showed up in January with tennis shoes, a London Fog style short jacket and some sweaters. He actually got though several winters by just being too stubborn to admit he was COLD.

Yeah that is all it does in the UP of Michigan is snow, snow, and then snow some more.

Let’s just put it this way. I’ve lived in North Dakota all my life and I think hot is when it’s 60 degrees out…

I’m from Minnesota and I have to say that U of M - Duluth has to be one of the coldest… there are underground tunnels here to get class to class in the winter since on some days you can get frostbite in a matter of minutes. A lot of kids have to take vitamin D pills because they rarely go outside.

Lived in eastern ND for 13 yrs - just a little chilly. Learn to dress for it or stay inside - the choice is yours.

The farther from water, it’s colder with less snow is NOT correct. Let’s not forget about mountains. Are you windward or leeward? Is it ocean or lake? And what about accumulations? And how many sunny days? Cold and snowfall amounts are related to several factors. You reed to contact students at a particular school to find out what the weather is really like.

U of Alaska - Fairbanks

In that case, you’re much better off in Chicagoland or Michigan than in Upper New England.

“I know they’re all cold, but colder than western Mass?
(Marginally colder would be ok.)”

Syracuse is somewhat colder than western Mass, and Syracuse is a lot snowier too. 180" of snow in Syracuse 2 years ago and 150" last year, the average annual snowfall makes Syracuse the snowiest city of 100,000 or more in the entire US.

Syracuse also has a reputation for being one of the grayest cities (most overcast days) in the US. I happen to like that kind of weather, but others may not.

Most places in the northeast and the midwest get freezing.

Syracuse (tons of snow, like Cuse0507 stated)
Minnesota-Twin Cities
UMich
Wisconsin
Michigan State
