I think many here are missing the point - it’s not about Seinfeld’s comedy - but about how overly pc and sensitive today’s college kids are and that they don’t find the humor in much of anything anymore.
I think it kind of is about Seinfeld’s comedy. If this generation doesn’t enjoy his comedy, that doesn’t mean that they don’t have a sense of humor. There seems to be plenty of college aged kids out laughing at the movies. They just have a difference sense of who is being “laughed with” and who is being “laughed at”. If that means that they are more socially inclusive and see the world differently, then I think that’s a great thing. If they aren’t enjoying gay jokes and race jokes that used to be an easy laugh, well, I guess the comedians had better find some new jokes.
This generation is going to have to work together to overcome a lot of garbage that has been left for them. I bet jokes about OUR generation would go over great.
Are we talking about Seinfeld’s stand-up acts, or Seinfeld the TV show?
Personally, I don’t care for his stand-up acts but the TV show is hilarious, and brilliant.
Actually what you just said IS the point. That sentence sounds just like my mother when she used to complain that my generation didn’t appreciate good music, since we thought the Beatles and Rolling Stones were music.
The TV show did have talented writers. The standup was always the weakest bit.
I go to live music more than standup shows, but I did like Patton Oswalt at Bumpershoot, and lots of music festivals have a comedy stage.
Well, both my Ds loved Seinfeld (the show), and those two girls could not be more different. I don’t believe there are not a fair amount of others their same age who also grew up laughing at that show.
I am very close in age and religion to Seinfeld. I think the show is fantastic. One of the best comedies ever on tv.
People don’t think the show The Contest, the show about Junior Mints, the Marine Biologist, Shrinkage are funny?
The show where the lights from the restaurant across the street keep Jerry or Kramer up all night? The Soup Nazi? The Pirate Shirt? The episode where George double dips? The show where George pushes a little old lady out of the way when he worries about a fire? The Race? Where Jerry steals a loaf of bread from an old lady? The reenactment of the JFK Assassination?
What is wrong with you people?
We all have a different idea of what is funny. I found early episodes of mash funny. Seinfield has really never resonated with me and many others. We are all so different.
MASH is ok.
People do have different tastes.
Meh, Will & Grace was more up my alley.

My D and I can’t stand Seinfeld (the TV show) but my husband loves it. Has nothing to do with being PC - I just don’t think it’s funny. In fact, I think a lot of those bits in #46 are just annoying (sorry, dstark!)

I was not a fan of Seinfeld, and can’t explain why. A Jewish friend suggested maybe it was “too Jewish” for me, but then I loved, loved, loved Curb Your Enthusiasm, so I figured that could not be the reason. I am also a fan of Modern Family, even though I expected not to like it. I thought it would be trite, but it works.
I like Modern Family too, particularly the patriarch, Jay. I do wish shows could get away from certain stereotypes: the brainy daughter is plain looking and the pretty one is dumb.
I have loved Modern Family. This year, though, the writing was not so good, and it may not be nice to say, but some of the child actors are horrible.

I liked Seinfeld very much, and love that it saves a record of a particular time and place. It may not speak to our kids’ generation, not that there’s anything wrong with that, yada yada yada…
I think Big Bang is the new Seinfeld, but relies more on stereotypes than Seinfeld did. But I may be wrong about that.
My kids like comics like Margaret Cho.
Has anyone seen the CNN premiere of the documentary “The Seventies”? It premiered last night and the episode covered TV shows. They showed some of the humor of All In The Family (a show I loved as a little girl, mostly because I related to the physical surroundings of an urban blue collar neighborhood) but MAN, can you imagine that humor playing today? They played clips in which they used the terms “fag” and “coon” and even used the n-word. There’s no way on earth that would fly in a sitcom today.
My kids don’t care for Seinfeld, but I don’t think that means anything other than we tend to like what we grew up with. I mean, I liked Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart and Carol Burnett as a little girl but I didn’t expect my kids to like them. And Ed Sullivan and Johnny Carson and Jack Paar didn’t do anything for me since I’m not that generation.
