College graduation, 2007!

My daughter graduates high school this Saturday (in Texas), then immediately after I catch a flight for son’s college graduation on Sunday (in New York).

We’re leaving tomorrow for oldest son’s graduation from Emory. Honors ceremonies on Sunday and graduation on Monday. Oldest son will stay in Atlanta til the end of the month and then come home for middlest son’s high school graduation, and then leave for life in D.C. Four years went way too quickly…

Our son graduates June 3 from Williams. I’m already nostalgic for his college days. We live overseas and only made it to Williamstown once or maximum twice a year, but I was completely enchanted by the area, so much so I’d retire there if I could talk my husband into enduring winter again. Maybe the ideal combination would be Williamstown + Bali with a little New York and Florence thrown in.

None of my son friends is going directly to graduate/professional school. They are all interning, doing good, traveling, weighing their options. My son’s headed toward Boston for a position with an architecture firm. If it appeals he’ll start the architecture graduate school search and apply process. He’s secured a summer sublet and is anxious to start life in the real world.

Our next project is moving in in reverse: What to do with all that stuff that we so laboriously transported and he so assiduously accumulated.

We are getting dressed to go to Rice graduation. The weather is good (amazingly- no rain). Convocation last night was wonderful. My daughter performed an opera scene in the concert at Shepherd School and there were really good fireworks outside after the concert. Her last Rice performance (sniff, sniff). WildChild is being gracious and suffering through his sister’s big weekend, even with his post-surgery leg brace. (does anyone else have to bribe their 20 year olds??)

MOWC, hope you have a wonderful day at Rice!

Due to extenuating circumstances, D finished her last class over 1000 miles from uni- she had one spring class needed, but left the university area over a year ago. So, when she graduated this June, I don’t think any of us will want to pay to fly there just for a state U huge cermony. On the one hand, it has not been an easy road and I would like her to enjoy the glory moment, BUT she is attending grad school in the fall and has a FT job working, including weekend work) to save money for the fall living expenses. I would think she would want us to give her the money rather than pay the travel expenses if the options were offered, but I am sad not to go.

My oldest son graduates from the University of Virginia this Sunday (May 20th). You, my fellow parents, understand my feelings as I type those words.

We will all be there, on The Lawn, to cheer him on. The weather looks to be beautiful.

We are among the first sets of parents who have been through the whole cycle on CC. (My Join Date does not reflect the years I spend on CC before the CC computer glitched.) CC helped us through the application process, guided us through packing, cheered us for the successes–good and great–and consoled and counseled us when things went wrong. The only question is: How did parents do this before there was College Confidential?

Redbeard! congratulations on the graduation. Wow!

hey redbeard! my daughter also graduates from UVA this sunday!!! we’re all going, and i’m glad to hear the weather will be good! i still remember our first visit there in her junior year of high school, and she fell in love with the “serpentine walls” and TJ, of course! she’s got a fabulous job waiting, as she decides on her exact path for later grad school. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL!!!

Well, I’ve uncrossed the fingers of ONE hand. My charming daughter graduated Monday from Reed. I’ve seen the diploma and checked the spelling of her name. In an irony, one of the speakers was the younger brother of a friend from when I was in high school–I hadn’t seen him since 1972, but we had a lovely talk.

Still waiting on my son’s final grades. Nervously waiting on my son’s final grades.

Yes all, do check those diplomas and degrees. Our oldest finished in the fall semester with degree date of January '07. DD1 has just sent back the 2nd degree; the first one came with the old president’s signature (they had to redo the whole batch with the corrected template) and the next one had the correct president but was dated January '06.

DS reports the final grades DO allow him to walk this Saturday. It’s been close for the past 8 semesters.

DD2 (the youngest) gets the HS diploma 5/31

The triple celebratory shindig is in July.

CONGRATULATIONS to all the 2007 GRADUATES, with a special shout out to the UVA grads!!! My son is a rising 2nd year at UVA, and told me how great The Lawn looked as it was being prepared for the big day.

My son graduated from Univ. of Pittsburgh a few weeks ago. Moved home for a free month before starting his summer job, which preceeds his school year job for next year in China. But he misses a new girlfriend, so is returning to Pittsburgh before the lease runs out, to visit and return to volunteer at his work study job site. Silly and sweet.

So who are the graduation speakers this year? Williams will have Katie Couric which I think is a weak choice but at least we know she’ll be well spoken. :)

The pre-graduation baccalaureate address speaker sounds really interesting, though, Shiranee Tilakawardane, a Sri Lankan judge supreme court judge. They seem to be having a powerful women theme (which I’m all for) but wonder why they didn’t draw on Susan Schwab, cabinet member and Williams alum.

Parents of graduates—be sure that your kids’ accounts are paid up, including library fees. They should be getting email notices about any overdue books and outstanding bills that might hold up the diploma.
It’s worth a mention!

MOWC and LWMD: My son also graduated from Rice on Saturday. Great day. Great speaker. Fantastic four years at an amazing university. He will start BCM in July so will be in Houston for at least 4 more years.

Yay Owls! I thought the speaker was good, too, but D and her college thought the topic was a little strange. They were hoping he could hold it together!

We are heading down to Centre College in Kentucky to see our oldest son graduate on Sunday. These past four years have gone so quickly! His younger brother, who just finished his freshman year at Rhodes, is down enjoying some of the senior week festivities with his brother. We will all meet up on Saturday afternoon. I am so happy and proud. It seems like only yesterday that we were at the orientation meeting listening to President Rousch giving his speech - telling the new freshman that his advice to them was: “Do your best, be your best, no regrets.” It made me cry then and still does!

momrath~ UVA will have John Grisham!
coronax2~ THANKS! so looking forward to seeing that LAWN!
