College Graduation

Holy JPMorgan. Never heard of a college chair!

For ds:

Title to the used car we had given him in high school,
Sufficient funds to buy a set of new tires for said car, and
Two pieces of Away luggage (he travels a lot in his job)

I agree that if your student has loans, a nice size payment towards it would be a great gift. My college was paid for, DH had to pay his way and 3 years of post grad too. He worked and took out students loans. We got married his 3rd year of law school and he had $30k in loans. It took us 10 years to pay that off and did effect the size of house we could purchase, and other such stuff.

My best friends son was paying off his student loans and right before he married his parents paid them off for him. She said he just about cried.

College chair…my kids had NO interest.

@abasket here is the one from Yale. There are other options…but this is one.

For my oldest, we paid for a course he needed (not college) and for clothes and other things he needed to move overseas. Had a nice dinner. We still paid for his vacations for a couple of years after he graduated. So while nothing concrete, more helped him with expenses.

We are going on a trip with the younger one, which is more of a vacation than a graduation present. I expect we will also help him with moving expenses and perhaps a car so not going to gift him anything specific at this point.

College chair…interesting… I really can’t see any of my kids wanting something like this - nor me! But a unique item if that’s your thing!

Of course paying off loans is a nice gift! But if they had loans during college because we couldn’t pay all costs we aren’t likely to be able to pay off or gift a large amount when they graduate!

I think we need two threads. The thread for college gifts 2 or 3 digit numbers and the thread for 4 and up digits.

Perhaps if there is something school - specific? When I read college chair my mind went immediately to the University of Wisconsin/Madison terrace chairs. They are ubiquitous and my H, an alum, was so excited when I purchased one for his birthday a few years back. Whether he would have been so enthralled as a new graduate, I have no idea. We didn’t really get “graduation gifts” for any of our three but did help each of them get settled post-graduation.

We paid for our son’s class ring, class pistol, and class saber. Unfortunately, his school mementos are weapons of mass destruction. Also, we will be gifting him a portion of the 529 we did not have to spend on his college education.

The only college chair I could think of was:

I thought his family endowed a chair in his name. That would be SOME present!

Yikes. Thanks for educating me. That Yale college chair in the link is butt ugly. No way out kiddos would have ever wanted anything like that in their homes! And that price - yikes.

LOL, @Nrdsb4 !

Ha! When I saw “college chair” I thought of something like this - a camping chair (for us commoners) or maybe a director’s chair (for the well-to-do):

I guess my hillbilly roots are showing - I never dreamed there was a college chair made of wood and shaped like real furniture!

When DS graduated, his “gift” was that we would continue to pay his cell phone bill for another year.

^^^ Nice gift @3puppies - appreciated I’m sure!

A college chair is basically a wooden chair with the name of the college engraved in the back of it. Sometimes it also has the graduate’s name. They’re usually painted black.

My D already knows what her graduation gift will be … money (actually an investment account).

LOL @scout59… another hillbilly here - that was my thought, too. Just could not see why those folding chairs would make a special gift…

I had never heard of a college chair either.

We gave each of our kids a used car for their SR year of college. We also went on a trip with them—3+ week trip when S graduated and a trip to Chicago when D graduated. We also paid S’s security deposit & 1st & last month’s rent in his new place so he had a place to live when he started his career.

We gave S a Skagen watch as well, but it was too wide for his slender wrist so he had me return it. Their favorite gift was graduating debt free.

@abasket we didn’t gift the kid $27,000. We paid the loan off over an 8 year period.

My friends gave their graduates the gift of three years service from their financial advisor.

He advised them on how to pay off their loans and save for the future.

For my D we had a party. She got a new iphone from us. From other family members she got gift cards and money. She put some of the money into savings and used some of it for a budget trip to go see friends in England. She used the gift cards to buy clothes for work…
I would say a lot of it depends on the finances of the family

We also feel that their college education was a gift as well!
