College Help

Sounds like you’re good at baseball - do you hope to play in college?

I assume you’re not in the D1 recruiting process or you would have led with that. But if you’re a strong enough player for D3, that could give you an admissions advantage at some top academic schools with good need-based aid.

Is it important to you to attend a school that has engineering, or would a(n) LAC with a well-regarded CS major also be okay?

Congrats on the MIT program!

Maybe take a look at Denison University in Ohio, which has just joined Questbridge. Denison is generous with financial aid and also has a strong athletic program, in case you are interested in continuing that. Denison has a Data Analytics program as well as CS.

@aquapt I’m a 1/2 star tennis player, but don’t want to play tennis in college- could make low D1 school
does LAC with good CS= school with engineering?
are LAC’s more well rounded, engineering focused schools just require more STEM classes right?- if so I would prefer engineering schools but affordability is the priority

If you want to study engineering, choose a college where you can study engineering. Note: a few LACs offer engineering (e.g. Harvey Mudd).

LACs may have varying levels of general education requirements ranging from none (Amherst, Evergreen State) to extensive (Harvey Mudd). Colleges with ABET accredited engineering programs do require some humanities and social studies general education due to ABET requirements, but the requirements vary in volume (typically from about 12% to 25% of the overall curriculum).

What is Harvey Mudd, Rutgers, RPI, WPI, and madison fit into my profile?
what are there main differences?

do curriculums vary greatly by college? does having a famous professor help you more?

I find that CS is mostly self taught.
Anyone have any pointers on coding bootcamps? Do they actually work- i find that the because they are so hidden to CS majors, reviews are skewed to the extremes. Only people who really like them or hate them write one.

The basic content of an ABET-accredited engineering major must meet the (relatively high) minimum standards for ABET accreditation. However, the same major may vary at different colleges due to:

  • Curricular organization.
  • Additional material beyond the minimum standards.
  • Elective courses and subareas of the major.
  • General education requirements.

Congrats! I was accepted into mathroots this year too. Have you heard anything from them as to what the schedule might be?

you should have received an email with a google form

Take a look at Rice… small (4000 undergrads) with a solid CS program. They offer the Rice Investment The Rice Investment | Office of Financial Aid | Rice University and value geographic and ethnic diversity. They also offer a lot of great first gen and low income resources: First Generation and/or Low Income Student Support | Student Success Initiatives | Rice University. Rice is also a Questbridge partner school.
