College list too long? [NY resident, 3.78 UW GPA for International Relations]

Pitt is tougher to get in than Delaware. They do rolling admissions though so if you apply in sept you should hear back by October. Nice to have one acceptance in hand.

do you believe i could get into lehigh uni and conn college?

My D applied to Lehigh for IR. She has slightly higher stats than you. I’ve got her odds about 50-50. Will let you know after decisions come out.conn college is a target. Visit if you can, interview and show interest.

If you would like to screen your tentative choices based on your interests in international relations and, apparently, foreign languages, these sites may be helpful:

I don’t think your list is too long because you are starting. After you make some visits or set a budget, schools will come off.

For example Colgate is nothing like NYU. Bucknell nothing like GW.

SO go visit.

I didn’t read all 64 messages so not sure if you spoke of budget but yes you are way overweighted toward match reach high reach.

4 to look at if not mentioned - Dickinson (since you have isolated LACs but it’s less so), Pitt, Indiana (ok too big), and for urban College of Charleston. All are likely to safety.

Good luck.

And because it’s urban / suburban ??? Not as many of your list isn’t…

Go see a rural school - see if it works for you.

I’ve added both Pitt and Dickinson. Yes, I am starting to visit campuses so hopefully it gives me an idea of what schools to remove. Thanks

all locations work for me honestly. just I prefer urbanish for internships and opportunities. reason for removing dartmouth and what not

If you like urban, add Charleston. My daughter is an Intl Studies poli sci dual in the Intl Scholars program - linked below. Her interest is IR and US Asian relations - China and Korea etc.

It’s a safety but getting in the Scholars program a reach.

She did the DC semester and worked at a well known think tank.

Many schools have a DC semester - but if you like urban, Charleston is downtown - about 9-10k kids so not overwhelming.

Pitt is good at many things and Hamilton Lugar at IU is top notch !! Someone mentioned Korbel at Denver. It’s a big cross shop with American, according to both. But an easier admit.

I saw journalism mentioned by a few. Not sure if print or broadcast but Syracuse and a Maxwell / Newhouse dual would also be great.

i seriously looked at IU but can I be honesty?
I just don’t want to be in Indiana lol

i’ve also listened to other advice and looked at the required courses administered at schools and I think id like to remove TRINITY COLLEGE. their courses just don’t sound interesting

If you’ve not visited any schools, that’s step one. Your, talk to kids, eat on campus, walk the surrounds. My daughter was giddy for Elon, Miami, and James Madison til she visited. Same with GW. All came off.

Others she was ehh about at first went on.

Most will have IR. It may be packaged in Poli sci or intl studies but you’ll find it.

That’s why your list isn’t too long. My kid has 110 but they quickly come off after visits. And your list quickly shrinks. Hard to run that exercise on paper alone. She ended up with 21 apps but you can do less if you choose.

Also, while you say budget isn’t an issue, check with your folks. They may not want to spend $90k a year when they can spend $30k or 50k. Now multiply the difference x 4.

Thank you for this. My son is a rising senior and he’s considering International Relations/Middle East Studies/Jewish history. He’s been taking Latin in HS (will bump up to AP for senior year) and can read Hebrew well enough. Is this not enough? Should he work on learning Arabic over the summer with Babble etc?

Do you feel i should drop bucknell? i feel that there will be limited opportunities and internships for me there.

Bucknell is pretty, middle of nowhere, preppy, mostly wealthy and dominated by the Greek scene so that might help you decide.not sure about the IR major, when I hear Bucknell I think finance, etc

Yes, OP, that list is too long. Your focus now should be to do your homework and pare it down. Please do not add more schools to the list!

If you haven’t already, its good practice to make a college spreadsheet of sorts. That way you can note down everything that’s being said here alongside your research and not lose it somewhere along the way.

ETA - You can find a lot of templates online to create a college spreadsheet or design your own.

I’m a Bucknell grad. It’s a great education but it is out in the sticks. Good companies come to recruit for permanent jobs but you are far from everything for internships while undergrad.

Yeah, I decided to remove it because I really want a good, solid internship in government

If you are talking about summer internships, then that’s possible with all the schools on your list. If you want internships during the school year, then yes, school location will matter.
