Yeah, it’s very hard to beat the Florida in-state tuition. I wish we were eligible for it.
CofC is in my daughter’s top group but she’s been reading various things online about the student experience…Reddit, Reviews etc. the reviews seem mixed.
Does anyone have experience with a previous child that went there? Or have any experience with CofC? Thanks.
My OOS daughter is a freshmen this year and has been loving her first year experience. She fell in love with the College of Charleston (CofC) early in her college seach process. She wanted to be somewhere south (we live in the Boston area) at a medium-sized school that had a real and beautiful campus that was preferably walkable and safe to many amenities/things to do. Initially, I was uncertain where such place might exist BUT we found it in Charleston and CofC specifically!
Our daughter was admitted as an early applicant with a generous merit award but waitlisted for the Honors College. After demonstrating continued sincere interest and sharing additional grades, she was also admitted into the Honors College with some additional merit.
It has been everything she hoped for! Not that challenges don’t arise, like anywhere, but it has exceeded her (and our) expectations. Her dorm (Liberty Hall) has been quite positive and is so well located on campus and is nearly adjacent to King Street shopping, restaurants, and entertainment. She has a terrific roommate (which always helps!) as well.
She and her roommate rushed sororities during their first (and just passed) semester and both were fortunate to get into sororities they both loved. Although we as parents, were a little reluctant to have her rush her first semester, in retrospect it was a great decision because it forced our daughter out to events and activities that led her to meeting lots of people and to get to know the City of Charleston perhaps more quickly than she ordinarily otherwise might.
Her coursework has been challenging/rigourous but manageable and allows for plenty of downtime when she plans/organizes correctly. Her advising has been outstanding and so far her professors have been very approachable and truly caring. The Honors College adds some additional rigor and requirements but the benefits have been well worth it.
The City and the area beaches have been outstanding and a great perk! CofC has a great community vibe and integrates very well into the broader City. There are tons of opportunities for work or internships and the city feels safe and friendly. We, as parents have enjoyed the City so much, it is making us rethink possible retirement locations in the future.
As for gripes, they are the usual stuff I remember from College…the food can get boring and could be better, the dorms could use work, but Liberty has been great and is relatively modern. The City is not inexpensive - but where is nowadays.
On balance, it has been a terrific decision and she is very happy and so are we!
Happy to answer any questions. Cheers and good luck!!!
Congrats on having great choices! My OOS daughter is a freshman this year and loving it! She was admitted last year with merit BUT was waitlisted at the Honors College, which was a real aspiration for her to join. She stayed in routine contact with her admissions counselor at CofC and the Honors College and let them know much she wanted to attend CofC and that the Honors College was a real goal of hers. She sent some additional grades and was soon admitted into the Honors College - and with additional merit money!
I’m not sure if your son was waitlisted to the Honors College or otherwise BUT in either case I believe it is well worth having him reach out to
his admissions counselor at CofC and the Honors College - and let them know (if true of course) that CofC is his first choice and that being a part of the Honors College is a key goal of his. Also, to let them know that he will 100% attend if he gains admission to the Honors College and is able to earn enough merit to offset the very competitive value that his in-state options represent. It can’t hurt and helped in our case. CofC is a school on the rise right now with record applications over the past several years - and the admissions folks are being far more selective than in the past and really trying to figure out who truly wants to - and will say “yes” to their admissions offers. They want better yield and can afford to be choosier than ever to find students who want to be there. This trend should continue as CofC and the City of Charleston have been “discovered”.
Cheers and Good luck!
Hi! Admitted senior to CofC Honors with 27k merit here. Super excited and grateful for this amazing opportunity. I was wondering if you all know when Charleston fellows are released? Did it come with the admissions decision? Just wondering because I’ve heard a couple people talking about it and it seems like an incredible opportunity. Thanks so much!
OOS btw
Congrats! I think you will be very pleased with CofC and the Honors College experience! I’m not positive on the decision timing for the Charleston Fellows but a quick call or email to the Honors College will get you the correct answer!
Best wishes and congratulations once again!
Thank you so much! I sent an email to my admissions officer and will hopefully receive a response after holiday break.
Did anyone else get an envelope from the Honors College in the mail? It’s postmarked the 16th so prob just a congratulations, but I’m curious and D isnt here to open it!
Thank you so much for your perspective. It is very helpful.
Got an email from CofC after acceptance that a package was on its way. We didn’t receive anything. Anyone apply and get accepted EA and know what this package is? Box or envelope?
We did receive a holiday card.
We haven’t gotten anything either
I just re read the email, said an acceptance letter and gift are on the way.
Assume it’s an envelope with something small, but don’t want to miss any literature. Email was sent on 12/18.
DD received a package yesterday (Jan 21) - had a letter with merit confirm and a flag.
My daughter got a C of C flag, like teens use for their acceptance/decision posts on social media.
Has anyone received their financial package from CofC yet? We received merit, but not financial aid, yet.
