College rings?

Growing up, I loved to look at my dad’s UT class ring. On its side, it had Greek symbols that intrigued me. When I asked him about them, he explained that they stood for Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society. Once I decided I would major in engineering, it was my goal to get into the group and have a class ring with the symbols on it. So I did! I had the ring custom-designed, so it’s feminine looking. TBP is on one side, and the UT symbol is on the other. I wear it occasionally and still like it.

I wear mine every day. It’s a tiny signet ring with my school crest, doesn’t really scream college ring, but I know what it is! I graduated 20 years ago.

I have a Bachelor’s degree ring (big and clunky), which is now too small for my finger most of the time :(. I also have a Master’s degree ring, which I can wear on either pinky - like madskye’s it’s a smallish signet type with a flat stone. I thought I would get a PhD ring as well, but decided not to at the last minute. If your D likes jewelry and would be likely to wear the ring as such, I advise getting one of the prettier ones rather than the big clunky ones.

For those who did not get a ring years ago, can you get one now? My husband lost his first college ring and had it replaced. Then about 5 years ago he decided he wanted yellow gold instead of white and traded the replacement in. For the past year it has been sitting in valet box because he broke his ring figure in a sparring match.

I still wear mine to this day, mostly to college related events. It’s not typical - looks like an attractive, contemporary gemstone piece. People comment on it and are surprised to hear it’s my college ring.

Wear mine everyday, small and classic. The only other ring I wear is my wedding ring. I can’t think of any other woman I know who wears a class ring.

Indeed. My LAC is the exact opposite as the mere concept of class rings for our college would be viewed as terribly gauche…especially considering they were viewed as manifestations of bourgeois materialistic “Establishment” values rejected by a campus where most tended towards neo-hippie/radical lefty perspectives.

Incidentally, I do have my high school class ring which I wear occasionally at home and at one of the dozens of HS alum events I’ve attended over the last few years.* While some here may feel it’s weird for young professionals out of college still wearing their high school class rings, I still see plenty of professionals well into middle/senior years wearing them**. Granted, it does seem to be much more prevalent in East Coast corporate type offices than anywhere else.

Mostly fear of losing/damaging it along with not being used to wearing jewelry out of habit.

** Mostly alums of private day/boarding schools like Hotchkiss, Andover, Choate, etc.

Depends on the school/ring company concerned. Some will allow it without issues while it’s a hassle with others.

I wear mine. My D wears her. Most of her friends got them.

My undergrad ring is instantly recognizable to alums, but as it is signet style few others would recognize it for what it is. My only friends who didn’t get one, were those whose mothers passed down their own ring. I wore mine for years until I got a messy lab job where rings weren’t really wearable. I think I know where it is. My best college friends all still wear theirs all the time. Some can’t get them off anymore.

Bought h.s rings for each S. S1 never wore it. S2 wore his more than S1 did but not a lot.
Neither wanted college rings.

DH has a college ring. He can’t wear it to work but sometimes wears it when we go out.
I have a college ring that I used to wear daily. It’s a small dinner ring shape without a large stone. No one would know it’s a class ring unless they looked very closely. It’s yellow gold and I wear silver almost exclusively now so I seldom wear it.

DH and I both still have our h.s. rings. We were h.s. sweethearts. I wore his class ring with a big glob of wax in it to fit my finger.

On the subject of storing rings - I got a Sun Java demitasse cup and saucer at a trade show back in the 1990s and I store my two rings (BC and wedding) in there when I’m not wearing them. For guys, where you have at most two rings, it’s nice to have a place where you know where they are as they’re not something that you want to lose.

I never wear mine, but I’m glad I have it as a keepsake. We ordered one for my son–I suspect he won’t wear it much if at all either. It’s certainly an extravagance.
