College search - Junior: Ski Patroller East Coast: Looking for Engineering and close to skiing [PA resident, 3.5+ GPA]

Is honors calculus more or less rigorous than AP calculus?

Also, do you have budget constraints?

For just naming names, it could be a Syracuse (yes, it’s got parties - but not everyone is a partier) in addition to others mentioned. I first thought of Clarkson.

3.5+ GPA - could be a whole lot of rejection or admission - it needs context - level of courses taken, is that weighted or unweighted, SAT (coming) and most importantly budget. It also depends on the discipline - ie MechE might have more choices than CivE, etc.

But it could be a Manhattan (not sure what close is), New Paltz (less than an hour from Hunter), Union, Western New England, JMU (has engineering - closest mountain would be snow shoe).

You’ll be limited in choice for sure but - depending on the qualifications and needs, there will be something.

I know WPI in Worcester has a ski team that must be a club sport. I know of someone on it, who raced in HS but wasnt like a top skier or anything. I think their mountain is Jay Peak in Vermont (which is far). But shooting up 91 from Worcester into VT will get you to some great mountains.

UNH is not in the mountains (on the seacoast) but you could get to several mountains in 1-2 hours. UMass has decent access to small Mass mountains and Vermont.

UVM would be the best location for skiing. Has better snow than NH mountains.

Central/western NY colleges could be close to Greek Peak, I think, or some other smaller mountains for sure.

As Horace Greeley said, “Go west young man.” There are schools like Colorado School of mines in Golden where he could get to a number of ski areas within an hour, or from CU to Eldora, Colorado Mesa (an engineering degree would be from CU) within an hour of a few different resorts.

I assume he’s a jr patroler right now if a junior in hs. He’ll have to decide whether he wants to become a Nat’l patroler (which usually is a volunteer position but then he could ski at a lot of resorts) or a Pro patroler where he’d be hired by one resort or one group of resorts and work certain hours. To improve his hire-ability, he could become an EMT and he’d make more money too. My brother was a pro patroler for 40+ years, mostly at Winter Park and Steamboat, and he ended up as an EMT just by taking all the classes one or two at a time for certifications (and extra pay) and then deciding just to complete the requirement. He got paid more as an EMT and then could work some events like festivals in the summer as an EMT. His son is currently completing his EMT courses, and will graduate in April. He’s applying to work patrol at Steamboat next year.

His twin brother is at School of Mines but he has to pay for his own ski tickets!
