College tours you snuck away from

“There have been times when I think the tour guide was great, but D does not.”

ROLF…ROLF…ROLF…:))

I’m an undergrad now, but back when I was touring colleges with my dad, we walked away from Penn. They split the timeslot into groups, but there were still about 60 of us with one person. The tour guide was talking right by a leaf blower, so I couldn’t hear a word they said. We followed along until we were going to go into a building. Evidently, they had passed out wristband things at the info session (which I didn’t go to), so instead of making a scene, we just left.

It was pretty clear from the beginning that Penn was a terrible fit for me, but I was thinking that since I liked Northeastern, maybe I wouldn’t hate another city school.

That was the only tour I walked out on. All of the others I took were pleasant or at least tolerable.

So funny,. although we liked Burlington, we hated UVM’s campus. My family could not get out of there quick enough. I am the mother of two very happy Plattsburgh students, one of whom actually thought seriously about staying up there after graduation. She was a tour guide in her days there and was actually put onto a video and radio ad for the school.

OTOH, when we went to see Stony Brook with the middle kids, neither boy would get out of the car. H insisted on going on the tour anyway because it is his alma mater. The boys and I waited in the car.

We snuck out early from the New Paltz tour. D said she felt like every parent there had taken a wrong turn and thought they were at Harvard! I thought the admissions officers were pretentious - we don’t give merit awards, if you can get in here, that’s merit enough! D went to the aforesaid Plattsburgh and received merit money.

I know I posted after you, but my kids refused to get out of the car at Stony Brook. I was more upset with H, who demanded that they tour his alma mater, than with the boys, who had made it crystal clear that they were NOT interested in applying or attending. The school is large, ugly and even I agree that it’s way too close to home.

At SUNY New Paltz???

Bowdoin. We pulled into the parking lot. My D. looked at the campus and said, “drive”. Same thing happened when we visited St John’s College in Annapolis. In that case we didn’t drift away but the college tour literally ended within minutes. We saw all four buildings.
