College World Series NCAA Baseball Championship

I’m rooting for UVa for two reasons- one son went to school there and the other son was on an All Star Little League team with one of the current players for UVa-a kid from our high school and neighborhood. Go Hoos!

Oh well, Vanderbilt has this one. And historically the team that wins the first game usually wins the whole thing. So, Vanderbilt is looking good!

As a Vanderbilt fan, we never count on that. We have learned to sweat it until the last out. I am very glad to have this first one as a win, though.

Dansby is nails.

Wish Dansby would knock the sidewalk whistler fan into Aaron Boone and quiet them both.

Vandy freshmen full schollies wow!
Fulmer is impressive. It’s like watching the Royals get down against Bumgarner. Just no chance of getting it back.

Why does Fulmer get away with licking his hands before every pitch? The ump put a stop to the UF pitcher trying to do it. Then ump gets hit and they don’t use the crappy ump cam? That’s the one time it would be cool.

Anchor Down! Last year '09 D was here to watch and this year I have '06 S here. Fun to enjoy this with my VU grads.

It turns out that Carson Fulmer pitched while sick. He had chills and a fever the night before and into Monday, but he wouldn’t let the trainer tell anyone. Dansby moved out of the room so he wouldn’t get sick. Carson is a beast!

shocking Corbin (given his track record) wouldn’t call for a bunt in a 0-0 game.

3rd start for Waddell in 8 days and has already thrown 192 pitches in the CWS.
Adrenaline will carry you some, Fulmer last year could only go 5 in game 3 and that was with 3 starts coming in ten days. Sborz is most likely done.

Virginia pitching in the CWS:

Sborz:

13 IP…7 H…0 R…0 ER…4 BB…10 K…0.00 ERA…0.85 WHIP…0.77 K/IP…0.31 BB/IP

non-Sborz:

39 IP…38 H…22 R…20 ER…17 BB…17 K…4.62 ERA…1.41 WHIP…0.44 K/IP…0.44 BB/IP)

Waddell on 3 days rest with no Sborz does not seem like a favorable option for Virginia.

Heard rain is in the forecast. Vanderbilt needs to start their rain dance delay mojo again.

I hope for better luck tonight. The pitching delay tactic by Virginia was obnoxious. Twitter (not just Vandy fans) was going nuts about it. Ruined the game even for neutral watchers.

Unfortunately, there is not pitch clock in the CWS like in the SEC.

35 seconds between pitches is ridiculous. Watching Virginia play in the field is like watching paint dry. Each pitch involves lengthy negotiations between the catcher and the dug out (with the catcher actually kneeling and facing the dugout) followed by lengthy communication with the pitcher, interspersed with assorted fidgeting on the mound and the batter getting bored and stepping out.

I wish everybody would adopt the SEC pitch clock. Should be 15sec.

Maybe the Hoos were trying to wear out the whistle blower.
Seems like Vandy lost the game last night with the big error more than Va won it.

I am amazed at just how much Sborz and Waddell are pitching. Sborz seems to pitch several innings every other day (quite effectively) and Waddell is again pitching on short rest (3 days vs 4 days against UF). It’s not like these guys are soft tossing junk ballers either.
Has anyone on the broadcast called out the Virginia coach???
I know everyone wants to win, that seems a bit much. Reminds me of the old CWS coaches that rode a couple of guys into the ground.

Well, since Vandy knocked my team out at SR level (UIUC), I’ll go for them.

Ditto. Go 'Dores! Anchor Down!

H was so annoyed. I do like the use of the pitch clock.

Normally I can tune him out, but it was extremely difficult last night.

Big Congratulations to the Virginia team. Brandon Waddell did a great job. There were some fantastic plays by both teams - Dansby Swanson is incredible, and Kenny Towns - just amazing. The press conference after the game was so touching. Coach Corbin and the team represent Vanderbilt so well.

I’m not a baseball fan per se, 110% college football freak here, so I can’t speak intelligently about how baseball games are won or lost but I would say it was an interesting series. Vandy was the defending champs. Vandy is a program that wins against all odds in the cheat at all costs SEC as a private school that takes academics seriously so they were a feel good story. They were the big favorite because they were rested and had much more depth especially in the pitching staff.

The Hoos didn’t have a great year. They were better last year when they lost to Vandy in the college world series. The Hoos were lucky to even get into the ACC Tourny and if they didn’t get into the ACC Tourny they would not have gotten into the college baseball playoffs in the first place. They had a lot of injuries and had to rely on a bunch of freshman. They went 1-3 in the ACC Tourny and were bounced but that was somehow good enough to get them into the regionals and they went out West as a 3 seed in a 4 team Tourny. They won. They then beat MYD in the super regionals to make the 8 team CWS.

They beat a very good UF team, twice, as huge underdogs, UF was the best baseball team in the nation this year, no one shut down UF’s offense all year, to make the finals against Vandy. They pitch their ace in game one and lose. They have nothing left. It is over. If they don’t win game one, against Vandy’s depth, they really had no chance. Yet they beat Vandy two in a row to win it all. That is sports for you. Big win for the Hoos against the hated SEC. I live down here with the red necks so any time the ACC can shut them up, for a few minutes, it is sweet.

FSU won the 13 football NC. The beat Auburn. Aw-Cheat dow here.

Duke beat Wisconsin to win the 14 basketball NC.

And now Virginia wins the ACC’s first NC in baseball since WF did it in 1955.

Vandy’s offense disappeared at the wrong time. I’ll keep my mouth shut about the help the umps gave Virginia. Congrats to them on a great comeback. I am so proud of he Vanderbilt team and coach.
If you haven’t read the press on Phil Pfeiffer and his overcoming addiction, you should.

Mom,

I can’t hate Vandy at all. I can, and do, hate the rest of the SEC but it is all in fun. Hunt or be hunted. Eat or be eaten. That’s sports. That’s why people like it. It gets the blood boiling.

There were some questionable calls. I am sure that doesn’t help since Vandy really had to give this one away. No way VIR should have won a NC this year. They weren’t that good. The fact that VIR eliminated UF is a minor miracle in its own right. But Vandy stole one from VIR last year so … Karma.

I’d agree with you though, both programs have a lot to be proud of. It was as good a display of defense as you will see in baseball. And hustle. And smart, very few mistakes, play. All of which is a credit to both coaching staffs and the players.

UVa’s coach, Brian O’Connor, was born in Omaha and raised in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He played for Creighton at the CWS and his likeness is on the Road to Omaha statue outside the stadium. His parents were there last night with him. An emotional, great win for UVa. Wahoowa!
