The University of Michigan is actually more like 20 minutes away from the Detroit Metro Airport by car and roughly 30-40 minutes away by shuttle or bus. The DTW flies directly to every single major city in the US as well as to the following international destinations:

Amsterdam
Beijing
Frankfurt
London
Paris
Rome
Seoul
Shanghai
Tokyo

Midway Airport (Southwest Airlines) is very convenient for UChicago. From Boston it’s a 2.5 hour flight and about a 1/2 hour 10 mile cab ride straight down 55th st. Figure a 15-30 minute drive to the airport arriving at the airport an hour before flight time, 15 minutes deplaning and D is in her dorm room roughly 4.5-4.75 hours after I back out of the driveway to drive her to the airport. I think Northwestern is only a little less convenient from O’Hare. We’ve flown to O’Hare to visit to UChicago and it’s not a big deal either.

On the other hand, it’s a 6 hour drive to Cornell for us, so from that point of view Chicago is much closer and much easier, especially for the driver, LOL!

I would think any school in a 1-hop city from NY is pretty reasonable since you need at least 45 minutes to make a connection.

I agree that they don’t go and come home often enough for this to be a major factor, but you do make a good point about Purdue, since it’s 2 hours from Indianapolis and 2.5 hours from Midway Airport.

I remember thinking that Boston to Harvey Mudd was about the same time as Boston to Edinburgh in Scotland!

UPenn(Philadelphia) and USC(LAX) are pretty close to the airport.
