Colleges doomed to be mispronounced, mispelled, or mistakened for another school

A local TV announcer in Boston pronounced Duquesne University “doo kwez nee”

That’s the problem with hiring anchors from outside Boston. OT, but I once heard a Boston anchor refer to Leominster as LEE-o-min-ster.

Nobody mistakes Slippery Rock for another school.

BU…Boston University and Binghamton University (NY)

@skieurope LOL For the benefit of outlanders reading this it is pronounced “lem in ster”.

For some reason I always mix up RPI and RIT

Many people who have never heard of Elon University pronounce it eh-LAHN instead of EE-lon.

Yes, too many St. Mary’s! Was in the elevator the other day holding my travel mug swag from my daughter’s school, Saint (not “St.” thank you) Mary’s College, Notre Dame, the all women’s sister school to UND in Indiana, when someone turned to me and said ah, St. Mary’s, my son goes there! haha no, your son goes to St. Marys California, but that’s ok, go SMC! (not to be confused with Santa Monica College) ;))

Oxford College of Emory University (also just called “Oxford College”) has probably faced some issues with its name.

Guidedbywire, no, the school folks didn’t say Juanita, but many outside PA do. The link was the difference you cited, between atta and ahta.

Duquesne University is pronounced Do-Cane

And last season, I was online looking for the live feed of DD’s lax game that was about to start but no matter how many times I scrolled and re-scrolled through the game schedules looking for the link to the Saint Mary’s Belles game, I couldn’t find their French Cross logo anywhere on the schedule. Until I noticed a game about to start between Kalamazoo and the Saint Mary’s Texas something or others lol. oh well go Belles!

College of the Ozarks

Very few kids in our MA high school apply to schools in the midwest. Friend of my D’s was accepted at Grinnell College in Iowa–when she told people, many of them thought she said Cornell.

Scripps College and the Scripps Institute of Oceanography at UC San Diego.

^^^Until I became a CC denizen I thought they were the same school.

Art Center, CalArts and Sci-Arc

San Francisco State University (SFSU)
University of California San Francisco (UCSF)
University of San Francisco (USF)

UCSD
USD
SDSU (San Diego State U - AKA CSU San diego)

All the Trinitys! (And not just in the US.)

And: I see that someone’s mentioned Susquehanna in a couple threads as being doomed to being mispronounced. Maybe it comes from growing up within spitting distance of the Chesapeake Bay (which is basically just the Susquehanna River after it’s gotten too wide to call a river), but how in the world else would people pronounce it?

@LKnomad Californians are rarely confused about UCSD, SDSU, and USD. But they are confused about Cal and Caltech.
