Colleges for a music theory and business major?

At James Madison University in VA the Music Industry minor does not require an audition, and the College of Business is very strong. If he wants to major in Music Industry, this would require an audition at James Madison.

Based on his stats, Belmont and Drexel come to mind for music industry.
USC would be a reach unless he gets a higher score on retake; however, the Iovine/Young school sounds perfect for him.

Strictly for Music Theory + Business , I would suggest St Olaf. The Business Major is called Management Studies Concentration and can easily be added to any major because it’s 5 courses + 2 ‘experiential learning’ situations + capstone: students can do a semester in Chicago as early as Sophomore year/Spring with an internship, and of course music there is world-class. It’s possible to take music classes and participate in music ensembles even if one is not a major - about 1/3 students college-wide, do.
There’s no music minor that I can see, but a BA in music includes about 10-12 courses in music (including the Theory&composition concentration) and 22-24 other classes which may include Management.

Is he a musician?

Tell the Dad that the neurologist who took care of one of my kids in the ER yesterday was a music major in a conservatory as an undergrad.

I see KatMT already suggested JMU:

Take a look at Northeastern in Boston. They are big into co-op (all students), and I suspect that would be a big help for music industry.

Brandeis (but don’t submit the SAT scores as they are below-the-line and Brandeis is test-optional).

University of Rochester. It’s a highly ranked school in its own right, w a well-regarded business school, plus it has one of the top music schools in the country: Eastman School of Music.

It meets the “within 6 hrs” driving criterion.

Look at University of Pittsburgh. Maybe not a good fit if the focus is classical music; much more geared towards jazz, theory, composition. Good double-majoring opportunities though.

If the student is considering Belmont in Nashville, be sure to look at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro for music industry program.

UMich would be a good choice for both majors, however, it is very competitive.
