But I have only one left to place, so far older daughter graduated from Colgate and son a junior at UMich.

Don’t think I’m ready yet to join AA for CC. I’m not ready to quit yet. Maybe in the late Spring when she’s got all her decisions in. Or…maybe when she’s decided in April. Or…maybe when we go for orientation. But then there will be discussions about dorms and shopping for dorm supplies. Maybe then the Fall. Oh, but then all of you with juniors will want to know how her choice turned out and if it turned out to be gemütlich there. Or you may want follow ups after a semester, or…

No, I don’t think I have any sort of CC problem.

LOL. You’ve got us nailed. Actually, it may not be the right atmosphere for him, but we may check in out when visiting the grandparents. (I live on LI, of course my parents are in South Florida!)

Thanks again for the concern about my daughter. She has finally turned the corner and is slowly getting better. She wants to go out again today.

Linymom: The Hopkins undergrad campus is completely different than the medical campus. I think your son will really like it. It’s a beautiful enclosed campus with lots of trees and grassy quads. It’s much more serene than Penn’s campus.

I’m still not sure how I ended up with daughters who are drawn to busy, urban campuses. Penn is surrounded by three hospitals, so you hear a lot of sirens. When we visted I asked my daughter “don’t you think it’s a little noisy here?” She answered “What noise?”

Okay, computer illiterate me over here does not know how to update this list? Anyone care to assist me?

Shawbridge: One son, one daughter
College4three: two daughters, one son
Chocchip: two sons
Linymom: one daughter, one son

Btw Linymom: If he doesn’t enjoy the snow, I guess you’ve already considered Emory or Vanderbilt? You may want to check out Univ. of Richmond too, depending on his interests.

I still have to reconcile the distance from home. It is soooo easy with D at Delaware. I think I will give him the option. Have time to reconcile that…

BTW - Despite his anti-snow stance, he will be going to a football game with me at Northwestern next fall (and getting the info session/tour/etc). He will have to decide for himself which is more important, weighing academics, distance from home, weather. (My feeling is that will be his order of importance. He’s got to see more colleges first.) Then again there’s the money thing…

chocchipcookie, I think Rochester is a terrific school academically – it is really under-rated. For kids who might want to have research careers or go to medical school, it could be a great place. They told us that they have more research slots at Strong Memorial (I think that’s the name of the hospital) than they do undergrads. ShawSon applied and got merit aid, but it didn’t rise to the top of his lists. ShawD visited and thought the kids we talked with were very appreciative of the opportunities the school gave them, liked their classes and like the school, but her chief criterion was whether the kids (and alums) loved the school as opposed to liking it and she didn’t think Rochester won the love. I was very impressed with the school.

RVM, coffee here, but no bagel. Good luck with the ACT prep. I have just come back from getting my haircut before heading in to the office. I was going to stay home today, but the Office Manager just let a newish employee know that her performance is unsatisfactory and that she is on probation; I will probably need to just go in and let the employee know that I think that is the correct decision.

I looked at the A+ schools for B students list and I think a lot of Canadian schools would be superior to many on that list. Because Canadians tend to apply regionally, the Canadian schools take a broader swath of the student body and thus B students should be able to get in at a number of schools. But, the faculty quality is probably stronger than at most of the schools on the list and the cost is likely to be a lot lower. Application deadlines, interestingly are in February, March and April, although ShawD has submitted both of her apps and gotten in to one of the two and will hear from the other in January (when they get her end of semester transcript). I know that many of the posters here have a mid-Atlantic focus, but the on a quality-price standpoint, a number of the Canadian schools merit consideration.

Adding Shawbridge and myself - we raised our hands last night, but got lost in the cutting and pasting, I think ;)

Okay, I edited this just a bit to make it easier to understand! Continue to add to the list so we can remember who has what children! You can even put their year in school, that may help too! I’ll start…

Shawbridge: We loved Rochester…my S2 is only a freshman, but it could possibly in consideration for him as a possible reach…only negative I see is that it’s 5 hours away…Brandeis is much closer…would Brandeis even consider kids that are B/B+ students? We would also consider Univ. of Hartford too down the road, maybe their honors college, but it seems to be non-competitive at all to get in there…it may be too easy for a B student, but I’ve heard it has a very large jewish student population…does anyone know anything about Univ. of Hartford? Anyone applied there?

PRJ: Glad you put yourself back on the list! :)

Linymom: Great idea for a calendar fundraiser!! Too funny…

RVM: We did the SAT prep and felt it was definitely worth the money, hope it works for you guys too…

Well - we are back from S2’s first ACT prep session. Major Oy. I could tell from his expression when I picked him up that he was not a happy camper. He said she did have some tips - but it was clear that he is not into this and does not want to continue. He has a homework practice packet to do with another session scheduled for next weekend. If he is as negative after the next session - I’m calling it quits. He lacks the internal motivation and drive to want to improve his score. This is the same issue we have with his grades - he is fine with a B - no interest in pushing harder to get an A. So - he’s fine with his 27 ACT score - I see no real interest in working to improve it coming from him. A little frustrating - but really - no surprise. I think we’ll see how next weekend goes and if his attitude is the same - no point in paying money to hear him grumble and moan. I can get that for free!

Muhlenberg has an incredible Jewish community. One of the top % of Jewish kids and a great Office of Jewish-Christain Understanding that takes a national leadership role on this. Be sure to visit. Great location too. Close to NYC and Philadelphia and the students enjoy the benefits of both of these big cities/cultural scenes.

RVM: Sorry about the “major oy” on the ACT prep. My daughters have never been great fans of tutors. I think unless the rapport is great, the one on one thing can be too intense. My daughter improved her ACT score on her own using the Real ACT prep book and the Kaplan ACT prep book. I know he’s already done a lot of that, but maybe if he does some more practice tests his score will go up enough.

“Wow, levirim, when the time comes, I’m going to vote for you to either write the Cliff Notes for this thread or compile the Gemara.”

Haha. I’m glad that raising four kids and going through the college admissions process four times has given me the skills to do something!

Seriously, I would like to say that after going through this four times, I have learned that some things in this process are just counter-intuitive. I know that we all think that we know our kids but sometimes we learn things that we didn’t know about them through this process. For that reason, I would encourage everyone not to assume that their kids would do better at a small school or big school without first visiting examples of each to really see what is out there. Just don’t write off the idea of one or the other automatically - you may be very, very surprised by what you find and you may discover that certain assumptions are just wrong. I know that I had this experience!
And, sometimes it is good to put your student in a position where he or she HAS to do things for himself or herself - and he or she will surprise you and really develop those skills and will be much better off for it!
And, some shy or quiet students will do much better at a bigger school than a smaller one. This seems counter-intuitive also, but it is all over CC - some from kids who have transferred and have been much happier.
And, the culture of a school is developed by many other things beside size. A large school can be nurturing and a small school can be impersonal, and vice versa. A large school can be organized and a small school can be loosy-goosy, and vice versa. I really believe that these things come down from the top.

chocchip: The answer to your question about Brandeis is yes, they will consider B+ students, but see the test score data below. And, they no longer require SAT subject tests. They will give merit aid to very high achieving students, but they will admit B students with test scores in their range.

RVM - a little off topic question, but I’m hoping you have some insight…

We are visiting both Elon and Wake (maybe UNC-CH) in February and wondered how far they are from one another and if it makes sense to stay in just one hotel (either near Elon or Wake) and “commute” to the other for the info session/tour? We will probably tour one school on a Friday, the other Saturday (if we decide to see UNC, we will do so Monday).

We visited Hartford on the way back from Boston one time. They didn’t have tours that day but I contacted Hillel ahead of time and two freshmen showed us around and gave us the inside scoop.

Seems like a very nice school, nice campus and they have some strong programs (D has a friend there who is going for music ed; he certainly could have gone to a more academic school but the music ed program is very well-respected). One of the students who showed us around was from Massachusetts and she said they gave her so much FA it was cheaper to go there than to UMass (and she was a very average student). I think she said it was 20% Jewish. The Hillel didn’t have it’s own building, but it had it’s own lounge and there were students hanging out there when we arrived.

The school borders a not-so-wonderful part of Hartford and the exclusive area of West Hartford. The location was very convenient.
