Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

Quote for New Year’s Eve for my friends on Jewish B students:

An optimist stays up until midnight to see the New Year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves (Bill Vaughan). Which are you?

Hope you all had a great 2010 and that wonderful things await in 2011!

Happy, Healthy New Year to all!
May your test scores be perfect
Your essays complete
Your children so happy
Your scholarships so sweet!

I wish you all a happy and a healthy New Year! Less articulate and sweet than stradmom, but don’t forget to complete your FAFSA. I know that it is not a pleasant reminder, but the new form will be ready for you tomorrow.

Happy New Year!

Stradmom - I think you have said it best!

This thread in particular has become routine. So many virtual friends to wish only the best of everything in the new year.

Happy New Year to all of you. Ditto to what Strandmom said!

Levirm: I think you will be a great help to those Juniors.

RVM: Yet another thing we have in common. S1 is also at a highly rated LAC and also wants to go to lawschool, and yes I also wonder if in this economy if that is a good plan.

On Elon: You all have spoken so highly of Elon that I have thought of considering it for S2 (that is if he is comfortable going out of state and very likely of TAMU doesn’t work for him). I will tell you though with the description in PR regarding it being “preppy” and the social live being very fraturnity centered I would have never picked this out as a school for him. Those of you that are familiar with Elon do you find this to be true.

On being a URJ Avodah: So S2 and I have gone back and forth about this regarding his summer plans for several months. A week ago he told me he decided against doing the avodah program at his URJ camp. I really supported that because between essays and aps and possible campus visits it seemed that the June to early August schedule emcompassed more time than he was going to have. So today, the ap and rec deadline date, S2 tells me that he really really wants to do this since all of his best friends are going. We spent some time today trying to get things processed knowing full well that he may not be considered for the program because he is too late. I actually just read the info about the program today and I was really surprised to see that they included college counseling, providing info about Jewish friendly colleges and essay editing assistance as part of the program. That was really a surprise to me.

Happy New year to all!

Count me in with the others whose college age child is considering law school.

Spectrum: The camp avodah pogram sounds similar to the CIT program at the Jewish camp in our area. Several of my daughter’s friends did it last summer, and they all had an amazing experience. All of them managed to get their college stuff done before or after camp, and many of them have already been accepted to their top choices ED or EA. If he really wants to do it, I wouldn’t let the college stuff keep him from going. I would try to schedule some visits for the spring, however.

Happy New Year to all, now seemed like a good time to de-lurkering. I started follow CC during the MD blizzards of last year, but felt I had little to add since my oldest was a HS freshmen at the time. He is a soph. now and we are starting to have a little more idea about college. He is either going to major in some kind of engineering (participating in PTLW in HS) or math. Thanks to CC he went to MARS (the NSA Math camp last summer). His dream school is Harvey Mudd, his safety is UMBC - now we have to fill in the middle. Like another poster’s son he has Asperger’s which makes the college search all the more complex. He is growing and changing at a rate I could never have dreamed of just a few years ago, which is a wonderful and scary thing.

Shawbridge: one son, one daughter

Mom24boys: four sons, high school sophmore, 8th grade and twins in kindergarten

spectrum - on Elon - I have visited three times and don’t find the preppy/frat image to hold all that true. With S1 at Wake - same stereotype - we have found that there are more kids not in frats than in them - and they don’t feel left out. You just have to find your niche(s) - whether that be Hillel, or intramural sports - or whatever holds your interest.

The last time we were at Elon - we met 3 freshman boys coming out of their dorm - they were dressed just like S2 in shorts and t-shirts - we stopped and talked to them for a bit and they seemed very normal and down-to-earth. We are planning to visit Elon again in April - since S2 is considering applying ED - want to spend another full day there and make sure it is his top choice.

stradmom - you are now the official poet of the thread!

mom24boys - welcome - and I’m glad for your sake it is 4 boys and not 24 - which is what I thought it said for a second there.

welcome mom23boys - with 2 in kindergarten, you are going to be on CC for a VERY long time!

With the oldest, I was the young Mom in the kindergarten class, not so with the twins. When we visited the class last year one of the younger teachers asked if I was the boys Grandma - not at all I hope to be a Bubbie some day, but not anytime soon.

We started a pre-paid college plan for the twins this week, something we never did specifically for older two. Older and wiser now.

Re: URJ camp Avodah - although DH and I still joke about paying the camp so D1 could clean toilets, she claims it was the best summer of her life. I had hoped there would be a college search and application component of Avodah, but I don’t think there was for D1. D2 has been ambivalent about doing Avodah next summer, but sent in her application at the 11th hour. if she is accepted, I will inquire (and gently encourage ;)) about the college stuff.

Mom24boys - I have a friend whose kids range in age from HS senior to 1st grade, and she got the Grandma comment the other day too. ouch!
