Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

Oops…HollieSue:

Forgot to wish your father luck on surgery, but chances are they’ve postponed it already?!

My kids are already planning their day off from school!
Just LOVE these snow days!!

yabeyabe: from bayonne?? that should be interesting this week…have a great time!! if it’s the same one, my friend took this over Christmas break and loved it!

C43…Spectrum2 copied Richie’s apology and posted it at #4824 of this thread.

ccc and umich: thanks

so I read his apology and do feel better. whew. I am blown away by the responses you all made to him. Your words will certainly leave a lasting impression not only on richie, but also on anyone who follows the thread. well done!

ccc-no postponement on the surgery. looks like I am in for a challenging drive tomorrow!! thanks for everyone’s good wishes!

C43: If there is any doubt about sincerity. Let me stress that the note I posted was the reply from his PM to me that he gave me permission to post. The post on his thread was initiated totally by him umprompted.

All of you bracing for the snow I hope you find a cozy spot by the fire and enjoy the day off. As for us, my winter coat is out this week but I don’t expect to see a flurry so its work and school as usual. Holliesue I hope if the surgery is still on that the drive is calm and that it all goes well.

Oh, wow, holliesue. Be careful!! Best wishes!

Oy, HollieSue, yes, be careful!

Spectrum: What’s the weather & temperature like in TX these days? No 12-18" snowstorm warnings?!? No snow days from school?!?

holliesue: hopefully the forecast will be right and the worst of it will be overnight; careful driving…

thanks everyone!! I will be surfing CC on my iphone while my dad is in surgery!

we did not get hit too hard with snow. Roads should be clear before I have to head out to the hospital with my dad. Of course, my d will be upset that schools are only on a two hour delay instead of being closed!

Best wishes to your dad, holliesue, and please let us know how he is doing! Drive carefully!
Last night, I was shoveling with my daughter (jealous, spectrum and seiclan? :)) and we had an interesting conversation. I asked her what the first political or controversial event was that she could remember completely understanding as a child. She said that it was the Elian Gonzalez affair, but that she had a different perspective than everyone else because she was his age. She said that she remembered thinking, “Why don’t they just ask HIM where he wants to live? He should know! After all, he is six! It’s not like he is five!”
Haha. But it kind of reminds me of this whole college process. Are they really mature enough to consider all of the ramifications of their choices, especially regarding Jewish aspects of college? Should we limit their choices based on our older, wiser perspective?

That’s interesting, Levirm. I’m going to ask my S1 the same question…curious what he’ll respond.

Holliesue:

So glad you did not get so hard in upstate NY. I’m here in new england where outside it looks like at least 2 feet of snow and it’s still snowing now!

It feels like what happened to the Maryland group last year! :)

Levrim:

Interesting question. This has already happened in our family. I would say we looked at a good 10-12 colleges (that I researched for him) before my S fell in love with Tufts and wanted to apply ED. There was one college we looked at, which is a very fine college, but did not meet many of the criteria of what we thought S was looking for, including the jewish student total on campus. He liked it a lot and wanted to keep it on his list. I gently reminded him why I thought that even though it was a very fine college, he was looking for x and x…it took very little convincing for him to see that he should not keep it in his list. In the end, the list he came up with was very thought out. Most colleges on his list of 10 we had visited, I believe two we had not visited before app. time. All 10 had decent jewish populations, since that was a criteria important to me. My gut feeling tells me it will also be important to him as the 4 years of college go along.

Hollie, ++++++++ for your dad.

Boychild is still sleeping.

good luck with everything today, Holliesue. You have a group of friends here who are rooting for you and your dad.
We are literally buried in snow here. My kids are already asking if there will be a delay tomorrow!

On a different note, did anyone see Sarah Palin’s remarks which accused the media of a “blood libel” against her? I certainly don’t blame her for the awful tragedy in Arizona, but that’s a pretty strong insinuation for her to make. Maybe she doesn’t know what “blood libel” is?

"Earlier this month, Rabbi Michael Gisser, a native of Montreal, signed on as the newest chaplain in the university’s department of religious life. This historic hiring signifies the first time in our school’s 176 year history a Jewish chaplain has been asked to offer spiritual service and guidance to the student body. Rabbi Gisser couples service to the university with his primary occupation as the associate dean of religious life at the American Hebrew Academy in Greensboro

Rabbi Gisser remains enthralled at the enthusiasm surrounding religious life at the university. “Wake being such a small school adds tremendously to the school’s spiritual environment. There’s a clear hunger to bring vibrancy to Jewish life” the Rabbi said. Gisser further cites that over 250 of the university’s students identify with the Jewish faith in some capacity."

How encouraging! Now if I could only get S1 to show some interest.

This thread has become tough to get through for info, yet not short on opinions! Although always happy to kick in my 2 cents…I do need some concrete suggestions regarding the perfect Jewish “B” student - S2, 3.3 grades and SAT’s hoping to land over 1150 (no writing?) sports each season but not getting to college on any scholarships for sure…great average kid undecided and looking for a 4 yr wonderful experience. Miami of Ohio great fit but bad location. Would rather not be so rural.
