This thread is so helpful! Thanks to the OP for getting it started. We are also looking for Jewish life and Jewish presence in a small to mid-size school for my son, who is a B student. I’m going to look into some of the schools mentioned here that I didn’t know much about (eg., Susquehanna). But I am wondering if any of you know of schools that fit this profile in the Northeast. Many of those mentioned here are further from home than he would like - I don’t think he wants to go further south than PA. I am really having trouble finding small liberal arts colleges in the Northeast for B students. It seems so many either require much better grades or are Catholic schools with minimal Jewish populations. Any other New England/Northeast suggestions? Thanks!

Re: Pro-Israel colleges

Other folks living in the South can chime in on this, but I feel that most schools/students in the South will be highly supportive of Israel. Many people around here view Israel in a religious context, not in a political one.

DMMLE - welcome aboard! I am less familiar with schools in New England - but what about Ithaca in NY and Quinnipiac in CT? Drew in NJ? Those are a few that have been discussed on this thread that might work for you.

DMMLE – look at Clark U in Worcester, MA

look at UMass-Amherst

DMMLE: Muhlenberg is a match for a “B” student for ED…

also, Hobart/William Smith…Geneva, New York…

my daughter does not want to be on Long Island, but a school that may work for others on this thread might be Hofstra University.

I wonder about Adelphi, also on Long Island?

dmmle–welcome to Rockville’s thread, which probably now has more hits per day than Myspace! For some reson, PA is the (Jewish) motherlode of such schools, with Maryland, Va nad NC ahead of the NE states. You might want to explore the Parents thread for 3.0-3.3 students.

Other schools to consider are Alfred, Hartwick and Marist (NY), Stonehill (M), UVM (although perhaps larger than you wish), Endicott (MA) Hartford (CT) and Roger Williams (RI).

Quinnipiac is popular at our HS, but (fairly or unfairly) as a heavy drinking party school (with a very good physical therapy program) and Ithaca having some what of drug and alcohol laid back vibe (and an excellent communications program).

I find the col lege ******* and stu dents review sites are helpful with small schools not discussed often on CC

Gwen, Adelphi is very strong in theater, but most nontheater kids go home on weekends according to my friend’s child hwo is there.

Another one to look at in the northeast is URI (Rhode Island). According to Hillel, it is 10 percent Jewish. My D applied and got in, but we never went to visit. Just thinking of this because my D got into the Honors program there with a $10K per year scholarship – they really wanted her (she had above average stats for them and I hadn’t really considered that they might have wanted more Jews - her last name is not Jewish but her EC’s are VERY Jewish!)

Anyway, another option in New England to look at. Maybe others have some experience.

Thank you Yabeyabe-- and LINYMOM, we did a walk around at URI in April-- it is a beautiful campus and it ‘felt right’ to both D and I-- we’ll be looking further I think next year. It’s in a lovely small town and walking distance to an Amtrak station-- so DC, NY, Boston, and obviously Providence are all easily accessible by train.

Thanks, Shawbridge!
The person conducting the info session at Brandeis came out and said that it is a disadvantage to get merit aid if a student applies ED - but people that I know who have received merit aid there are at the very top of their statistics, and turned down the likes of Berkeley to accept Brandeis’ merit aid offer.

Here’s a link to an article about Jewish life at a few college campuses:

[Advice from Dr. Ruth, Constructive Dialog and More | The Jewish Week (BETA)](http://www.thejewishweek.com/features/more_web_features/campus_confidential/advice_dr_ruth_constructive_dialog_and_more)

And another interesting one from Washington Jewish Week (2 years old, but I had not seen it before)

DMMLE: I would strongly second the suggestion to look @ Clark in Worcester, MA. Smaller Jewish % than some of the others but an active Hillel. Also, there is a very strong social action culture at the school overall. D is a high B student and was offered a pretty good merit package to Clark (she did not end up accepting)

Early in the thread, someone mentioned Dickinson in Carlisle, PA. Again, not a huge Jewish community but they do have an endowed Jewish studies chair and director of Jewish student center (husband & wife couple) so there is definitely support for Jewish students. We met with them when visiting last summer. The surrounding Jewish community in Harrisburg is not so supportive (which is I think why someone felt it worthwhile to endow the positions on the campus)

Dickinson seems to have an active Jewish community - here’s a link.
[Dickinson College - Jewish Life at Dickinson](Asbell Center for Jewish Life | Dickinson College)
They also have a Jewish studies program. I would have Dickinson on S2’s list - but they have a strong international focus - which does not interest him. Great small college - good fit for a B+ student - has early action.

I think my mother helped start an organization is supposed to help college kids stay connected with Conservative Judaism. Koach? Does this come up on anyone’s list?

[KOACH - College Outreach Project - United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism](http://www.koach.org/)

Funny coincidence - I was just looking at this site. They do not provide a list of colleges - but do have articles of interest. It is a conservative Jewish organization.

My understanding is that Clark has the top-rated Holocaust Studies department in the country. A professor from that department spoke at our local Yom HaShoah commemoration last year; she was excellent.

I am now wondering how active the Hillel and Jewish activities are at Towson. I went to the Towson Hillel web site and did not see any Shabbat dinners listed for the month of May. There was a You Tube which said there is a community Shabbat dinner once a month. Towson has Kosher food, yet a Shabbat dinner only once a month? Also, when we went on the major tour of Towson (hundreds of people there for prospective students), I did not see anything advertising anything Jewish at Towson (except for seeing Kosher food in one of the cafeterias). Is the Jewish life in Maryland just at UMCP?
