Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

Well after 5 hour delay we made it to Greensboro. Very bumpy scary flight.

Socal I feel for u. Lots of special time for u and dd!!

Tomorrow UNCG. Will report later.

Is THAT kosher for Passover?

I’m glad to read about everybody’s doings this week. So many dedicated parents! So many hard-working, aware, fun and funny students!

SOCALDAD = What a great visit report. What a gift that admission counselor offered. Can’t wait to hear more about your other visits.

SoCaldad:

Wonderful to hear that your trip to UDel was such a pleasant one! Aren’t you the one that said your D had a good friend in NJ? Not that far away?

Isn’t it amazing how us parents worry and over-analyze everything…there is a college out there for everyone! Whatever their needs are…

I wish you the best of luck with your future college visits.

Shaw:

I’m anxious to hear how your visit to large U goes…I had my money on small U, but I suppose there are plusses & minuses to weigh…and in the end all we want is for our kids to be happy, learning, well adjusted, etc.,etc.,etc.

Samtayla:

You really picked the wrong time to go! A hurricane! Hope you and your S are safe.

Rodney:

Whaddya doin’ in sunny Calif? I’m jealous! and momjr. is in Jamaica…oh well…hope everyone has safe travels.

Btw: There is a brand new museum that just opened up in Philly all about Jewish History…has anyone heard about it? It was 10 years in the making…lots of Hollywood stars memorablia…Barbra Streisand, Jerry Seinfeld and Steven Spielberg were largely involved…interesting. I’d love to go sometime.

Happy Passover everyone.

homemade macaroons in the oven…not hosting the seder this year, so I am in charge of desserts and a side dish…makes things easy for sure!
Hope everyone has a meaningful Pesach!

Homemade macaroons in the oven? I’m heading to HollieSue’s house, yum!

I also got away with only two dishes…kugel and roasted veggies, easy this year, yay!

sounds great ccc.
by the way passover macaroons are super easy to make…believe me I am no Martha Stewart!!

2boysima, we have both plague finger puppets AND Chad Gadya face masks. Everyone, for some unknown reason, fights for the stick mask.

Greetings from Charleston! I have been schlepping all over today - needed a break to sit for a spell. I am a little ambivalent here on CofC - it’s interesting/quaint/in need of repair. I just walked around on my own today - S2 and DH are playing golf. Not much of a “campus” - it really blends in to the city. On a positive note - the students seem very friendly and down-to-earth. Everyone is wearing shorts, t-shirts and flip-flops. More girls than boys walking around - but I have seen boys as well. Tomorrow is the info session/tour for the 3 of us.

Socaldad - loved, loved your Delaware story. Hope the rest of your trip goes well.

Happy Passover everyone!

RVM: Thanks for checking in. I hope the rest of your trip goes well.

I just made matzo balls and Passover granola. We’re having a seder tonight at my sister-in-laws and one at my sister’s tomorrow night. My SIL was kind enough to have an early sedar so my daughters and I could attend. D1 is on her way home on Amtrak and will make it to two seders here and then have one with friends in her apartment at school on Tuesday. Penn has a program where students could pick up food and haggadahs and hold their own seders.

Happy Passover to all!

I’m just taking a quick break from total Pesach Panic, and was so moved by socaldad’s heartwarming story. Thanks for posting this and brightening my day!
Safe travels to everyone!

Safe trip home to SoCaldad. I’m thinking of starting a thread on the Parent Forum about what to do if your (especially freshmen) kid gets stranded at an airport or flight gets canceled.

chocchipcookie: we were just at the Amer Mus. of Jewish Hist on April 6th. It is a wonderful museum, right down the street from the Constitution Center. We didn’t have enough time, I think two hours just covers it. In the basement is one of my favorite menorah/hannukiahs - each candle and the shamash is a Lady Liberty, signifying milestone Jewish freedom moments - Exodos, Maccabean rebellion, 1948, liberation from the Shoah, etc. Brings me to tears every time I see it.

I’m doing pretty much the entire first night seder. Just got done shopping. Forgot the horseradish root grrrrr back out again I go. Keeping it SIMPLE! No potato kugels - roasted baby taters, etc.!

how to make passover granola?

crester, keeping it simple is buying the jar of horseradish. ;-)

c4t: I posted the granola recipe in the Passover recipe thread in the Parent cafe. It makes a great Passover snack or cereal.

there is a Passover recipe thread??? I am searching it out now!

My wife never believes in keeping Passover simple. That is why she is spending the day making Pacific Northwest gefilte fish (halibut and salmon). No jar from Manischewitz for her! It was always a given that horseradish in a jar will never cross our threshold. The gefilte fish is really good, but somehow it just doesn’t seem right.

And I thought I was really stepping it up when I switched from the jarred gefilte fish to the frozen loaf.

thanks momjr. I’ll check it out right now.

the above post made me laugh. I’ve never had the frozen loaf but do enjoy the canned fish, doctored up in a pot with sugar and carrots.
