Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

Congrats to collage1 on Bucknell and to Shawbridge on Queen’s University. Do keep us updated in the fall - we welcome reports from “graduates” of our thread.

Interesting new at Elon:

New International Studies Major Regional Concentration and Minor on the Middle East

A new International Studies major regional concentration and minor on the Middle East will be offered starting this fall. The new curriculum was approved this spring after five years of development supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Language Program. The regional concentration and minor include new courses, enhanced foreign language offerings and new study abroad opportunities in the region. New Middle East studies listings appear in the fall 2011 schedule and the 2011-2012 catalog.

Congratulations Shawbridge! Queen’s University sounds like a great choice for your daughter.

Congratulations to collage’s and shawbridge’s daughters!
Shawbridge, I have always heard that Queens’ Jewish community is involved and active. I think that this was absolutely a great choice for your daughter.
Collage, a Jewish student that we know loved Bucknell so much that he signed on for an masters’ program there (an extra two years - funded!) Your daughter seemed to be leaning that way all along.
Interesting that these two were choosing between big and small - and one chose big and the other small. Looking back, I think that it was great that they had the choice because they applied to both big and small colleges. I think that a lot of maturing takes place during senior year, and a student may be in a different place at the end of the year than in the beginning. Even though my own daughter applied early decision, I can see how having a choice at the end of the year is advantageous.

Does anyone know when Towsand has their next open house? The web site said it is full but I wouldlike to know when it is?

Towson is having junior open houses Friday May 6th and Friday May 13th. I remember looking at it and thinking how odd as both are school days in Maryland and they are within the two week AP testing period as well. Maybe Towson does not expect many applicants who are also taking AP exams?

Congratulations Shawbridge and College1. How nice to have the decision made! College 1, was the choice based on size or other factor, just curious. Your daughters will definitely not be accused of not considering their choices carefully, and they have a comfortable day to spare, I know that drill. I’m sure you are both thrilled!

Shawbridge, good luck with the gap year decision.

Congrats Shawbridge–I know how good it feels to have a decision made!

Spectrum, my D attends a very small, all girl private school that is, for good or bad, rather sheltered. Once she started looking at schools, she realized that she just felt more comfortable at smaller, more remote schools. She also is accustomed to very small classes where she is expected to speak up and actively participate in each class each day. Thinking about the large classes she’d encounter at a big school, she wondered is she’d get ‘lost’ or not feel as comfortable.

She does love sports–both as a participant and a spectrator–and the whole ‘Trojan family’ issue was quite a lure…she also had already been accepted to biomedical engineering so nothing to prove on that front (although she’s able to move into engineering easily at Bucknell). Starting sorority rush that first week of school did take a distant second to Bucknell’s system where girls rush sophmore year for my D (although this was not a significantly weighted issue, of course).

Because she was having such a tough time deciding, and she’s a math/science, very analytical girl, we created a math-based matrix whereby she assigned weights and numbers to her criteria and the schools but, surprisingly, despite their differences, the final scores were almost identical so that didn’t end up helping.

What finally sealed it was her strong desire to be at a small school forcused on undergraduates–two of her most highly weighted criteria. Other issues were pretty equal between the schools (able to pursue engineering, able to pursue neuroscience as a major if she decides engineering isn’t for her afterall, ease of study abroad opportunities, small (no more than 2 semester, preferably less) foreign language requirement, ability to play her sport at the club level and an active hillel or a way for her to “be Jewish” in a way that she wants.

Congrats Shawbridge!

Congratulations to Shawbridge and Collage D’s!

Rockville, LC looked great yesterday on our visit and in a photo finish, D chose Lafayette over William and Mary. She is a bit shy and couldn’t get past the 9 hour ride, or flight, or train ride, no easy visits from mom, etc. Both campuses felt wonderful to her, she doesn’t mind the cold, she liked the personal feel of Lafayette, and her best friends are either going to Stevens or Lehigh, so for her this is the right decision. To mom and dad, if all else is equal, take the less expensive alternative and the difference looks to be about $50k+ between Wm and Mary and Lafayette with the scholarship.
Whew, glad this one is over.

Congrats to frankur and daughter!!!..

frankur - I’m so glad she has a decision she is happy with - that’s the most important point. I know Lafayette has changed a lot in the decades (hmmm - did not like the sound of that) since I have been there. It was always a beautiful campus and it sounds like they have added quite a bit in the way of amenities in recent years. Best of luck to your D.

Congratulations to you and your daughter Frankfur!

Congratulations to frankur’s daughter! Friends (not Jewish) rave and rave about the personal attention that their son receives at Lafayette.

Congrats to frankfur and family!

It’s May 1st, are we all (senior parents) all done yet?

Congratulations to all parents of seniors. I’ve been checking out dorm, hotel, meal plan and laptop threads (suddenly D wants a Mac not a PC), but I’m sure we will come back from time to time.

Juniors, start your engines.

Senior parents don’t leave us! it is your advice on schools and all the options that mhc mention that will critical to us in time. we also want to know about first days on campus etc. so don’t come back from time to time, stay with us at least until the 2nd month of school.

Congratulations to Franfur on your daughter’s decision. I think that she made a wise choice to stay close to friends and home.

I will certainly stick around and update Junior parents on my d’s experience at a small LAC with a small Jewish population. I know many of you won’t consider that type of environment, but for those of you who are willing to consider that option I am more than willing to share! Best of luck to Junior parents…it is an exciting year ahead of you!
