Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

So many acceptances, wow!
The kids of this thread (and the parents who support them) are certainly testament to the idea that there are so many wonderful options for B students. Grades do not ever tell the complete story of a student, and if there is one lesson to be found from these kids, it is that telling their story is paramount.

Thanks for the info about housing. I will call the school dd is interested in today and send in the housing deposit, if no other deposit is needed or if it is refundable. Merit aid not given out at the school yet and I am worried that if they see dd is coming, merit aid may not come our way! It is an art school and merit aid done later not at time of acceptance. What to do, what to do…? Congratulations to all.

Temple University doesn’t guarantee housing to freshman. Housing is assigned first come, first served, based upon deposit date. Since Temple was high on D2’ list, we placed a housing deposit. In order to do this, we had to accept the offer of admission and pay a nonrefundable admission deposit of $200. The housing deposit is refundable. We don’t intend on depositing elsewhere unless/until D2 makes a decision to attend somewhere else- since all the other colleges she applied to guarantee housing.

socal, congratuations! hoping delaware letter arrives with an acceptance for your daughter!

congrats uskool and sandrews. socal you have quite a choice a head of you. can’t wait to hear of your travels and final decisions.

Just wanted to check in here and let you guys know that we are thrilled to announce that my son will be attending Emory College next Fall! Although he was really a A- student, his SAT scores were very lopsided. I followed this thread carefully and will continue to check in here. You guys are wonderful. Thank you for all your help and support.

seiclan: Awesome! Mazel Tov!

pamom: Good move on doing the housing deposit at Temple. My friend’s son (you know, the nontalkative one who is a freshman at Temple) didn’t decide to attend till sometime in April and sent in all deposits before the deadlines, but they wouldn’t guarantee housing. It wasn’t until sometime in the summer that he learned that he could get into the dorm.

socaldad: Your DD is doing awesome. Hope that last one is the result she wants!

Wahoo Seiclan!! Congrats!!! Atlanta is my kinda town! ;)

Congratulations on all of the recent good news! I think we are doing fabulously!

For those of you who will be weighing pros and cons of various college acceptances over the next few weeks/months - do share your debate. I find that decision making very interesting to follow and perhaps some of us can provide insight as well.

seiclan, congratulations on emory. we visited with my older daughter. all the best to your son!

Socaldad and Ittliz: Which dorms did your kids select at Indiana? We haven’t visited yet and my S has no idea which to choose. Thanks!

Seiclan: Wonderful news! Congrats!

Mom2009,

We have not done the dorm yet at IU. Might do this week when school is out. Northwest is where my daughter wants to live. Not sure what to list as alternate choices. If anyone here has suggestions, I am open to suggestions.

Congrats uskoolfish (NYU art - awesome!) and socaldad42 (some great choices to make!) and seiclan (I almost went to Emory, all my cousins did and my uncle was dean there for a time…great school, great campus!)

Wow! Congrats to Srandrew, Socaldad, Uskoolfish and sieclan on the latest acceptances to excellent schools.

Congratulations on all the wonderful acceptances!

My son just got his official deferral letter from Hofstra. “The Admission Committee believes your academic performance to date is noteworthy.” That made me laugh out loud, for real. Yes, it is “noteworthy,” that is one word for it. Not surprisingly, they want to see mid-year grades before making a decision. Unfortunately, I think his mid-year grades are going to be as “noteworthy” as in past years. I just gave him money to fill up his gas tank in exchange for agreeing to work with a tutor to pass his math midterm.

For the school dd is interested in, the deposit for attending is $500 and must be turned in before the dorm app. Nonrefundable. If we do this does anyone think that dd’s chances for merit aid could be less? The merit decisions are done later, as they are portfolio based. Thanks

Congrats to Seiclan. We loved Emory when we visited.

I wanted to share my disappointing news with “old friends”. S2 was denied ED at Vandy - where his brother currently is. We knew it was a reach but we were really banking on the holistic admissions - he is no superstar but a solid student and a well rounded kid. He seems to be o.k. although I know he is upset - he had his heart set on that place and the boys really wanted to be together. My older son is furious. I know things happen for a reason, but for now, we are all just kind of sad.

Thank you all for the support and for including me in your group. Best of luck to all of you with decisions still pending.

He hears from Elon next week - maybe he will join some of your kids!

Congrats on all the acceptances, sympathy to those it getting their EDs. My D got deferred at Georgetown, that’s a moral victory for her lol, and considering she made no effort beyond the minimums, we are as pleasd as punch. Got accepted at Northeastern, $20k, waiting on Illinois at 5 tonight. She definitely doesn’t want it, but I insisted she apply.

Still really struggling with the Pitt money sitch, all the offers she’s gotten are nice but thes been no slam dunk and so I feel like we have to visit all of them since they’re all going to cost about the same. Sigh. I should be half full and feel like a whiner, sorry.

Wishing everyone a happy break, safe travels for those hitting the road.

dwhite… i am very sorry for your disappointment. my older daughter is at vanderbilt, and you know from your older son, it is a very tough admission. my older daughter visited elon during the academic year and felt that it had a similiar vibe to vandy. the elon students reminded her of the vandy students. and the beauty of the campuses - both spectacular. so, good luck on 12/20. i will be thinking of your son. wishing you the best…
