Sweet story–reminds me of “Avalon.”

Great story Paying3tuitions. Happy Chanukah and Merry Christmas, whichever fits. Here, even the Chinese restaurant is closed. I’m cooking. S2 is doing a movie with his Jewish GF. Tomorrow morning we’ll have latkis. Its sooooo nice having everyone home!!!

With DD at the movies waiting for it to start. Think we’ll get Chinese on the way home :)

BTW - My rabbi’s bday is today!

1/2 of our clan went to see the Mission Impossible movie and the other 1/2 went next door to see the Sherlock Holmes movie. Everyone enjoyed their respective movies, so I guess I would recommend either one…

Yes, of course Chinese food today! :)

RVM: Great surprise to see S1 unexpectedly! Enjoy!

We saw New Year’s Eve. Nice light chick flick. Perfect for the day.

S2 is out seeing New Year’s Eve tonight. Heavier but really good was Descentants. Bring tissues if you go to see this one.

Chochip and Levirm great to see you both, its been a while.

RVM, what a nice surprise!

hope everyone is having a good holiday…i’m enjoying having my D1 home from pitt and have to brag a little …3.75 gpa fall term…!!

I had a busy time entertaining family over xmas unfortunately broke my wrist ice skating:(

typing is hard so i may not post too much for a while but I’ll be following along!

happy new year to all

pamom - so sorry to hear about the broken wrist - what a hassle!

I am having an “empty next” right now - S1 returned to his university for a bowl game and S2 is away for a few days at a regional BBYO convention. Just DH and myself - rather quiet.

We saw the movie “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” on christmas day. I knew that it was a murder mystery but I didn’t realize that it would have a very brutal scene in it. That said, it was a very good film.

We saw “We Bought a Zoo”, which everyone liked. Now if I could just find a Chinese restaurant in town that hasn’t gone downhill…

RVM:

This is your thread, so feel free to tell me that this question doesn’t belong here…what are your college or h.s. kids doing about summer jobs? Too early to decide? Are they doing paid or non-paid internships?
Are kids who are in their first year of college (like my S1 is) looking for a paid job related to their field or looking for any type of paid work they can find?

Just curious…let me know if people want to discuss this or if I should look for this in other threads…

I will start:

Just had this convo with freshman D…she wants one more summer to work at day camp; I thought it would be a good idea to try to get an unpaid internship in her possible field of interest…I think there is a compromise in the works: she may try to get something for the first month she is home before camp starts (unless, maybe she’ll do Birthright instead?) …she’s going to go to her career center when she returns to school to get their take on the conversation; she is of the belief that the internships can wait until she’s a rising junior; I’m not so sure…

I think it’s just fine for here - although you may want to start a separate “Summer Jobs/Internships” thread to get a broader selection of responses.

My older son has worked at his university the past 2 summers - and he may do that again this summer. I tried to suggest to him - gently - this past weekend while he was home that he might want to visit the Career Center and search for a more challenging internship or paid job - but was told that he has it “under control”. So - no clue what will happen there.

Younger son - is applying to be a camp counselor at our local JCC - also applying for jobs at local golf courses. Don’t know what to expect - it’s so hard to find a “real” job at 17.

^rvm: did S2 ever attend day camp locally in your area? They often like to hire alumni, and, round here, males are in short supply for these positions…

RVM–the summer after I graduated, my BF had a job at that JCC camp. I couldn’t understand why he liked the job, the hours were long and the pay was terrible. I made more money than he did, and took him out every Saturday night–Hamburger Hamlet on Old Georgetown, then movies at White Flint…

Fast forward 20 years, I worked at the local (NJ) JCC daycamp in order to send my own kids there for free. I started in 2002 and have been doing it for the past 10 years. I have met some of the most phenomenal people, many of them counselors. I’m thrilled that my daughter will be working with me this summer.

It’s funny, when I first started interviewing kids for college, I was more impressed with those who had served internships, etc., over the summers–but once I worked at camp I realized just how difficult the job is and how many amazing skills they master. I can’t say enough about what a great experience he will have–unfortunately, the pay is STILL terrible.

I hope he ends up at the camp!

P.S. my brother caddied at Woodmont one summer…hot, not too exciting, but the pay was ok.

D3 typically attends music festivals/workshops…what her grandparents call camps. If all goes well, she won’t have to pay for the experience and will build a network of professionals. She’s also worked as a counselor at a local music day camp.

D2 spent one summer as a camp counselor, and two (plus some winter sessions) working for a local filmmaker/entrepreneur who has taught her all sorts of life skills and professional skills while paying her relatively well. She’s also done volunteer work, ushered at a music festival, intern-lite - ed (ie she did a onetime project) in her field (photo) (If you’re confused on the counting, several of those combined in one summer!)

S did summer school one year and spent much of his time gigging in his undergrad years - as a sound guy, he found that summer was filled with freelance opportunities at festivals and such. Before college, he did the counselor at scout camp thing.

Mothek - Thank you! I do too.

[Summer Staff Opportunities - URJ](http://urj.org/about/union/jobs/summer/)

S2 will be a counselor at the URJ camp he is gone since 3rd grade. Happily this year he will be getting paid and he loves the camp. For the past 2 years in college S1 has been able to get a grant from his school for interships, one year at a non profit and one year in the DA’s office. He’s hoping to be able to do this again but hasn’t yet figured out where he will try and work. I think that is one of the projects for this break.

Nice to hear the variety of what kids do on their summer breaks. I was looking more for stratedgy then actual types of jobs.

Another words…Spectrum and RVM: Your kids both worked at their colleges in the summer…who did they contact? Grant money paid for their employment? Where do they live? Eat? Anyone to hang out with?

My S1 feels as if he wants to be here at home this summer, so he can find a job (9-5) and “hang” out with his friends each night. We live in an area where there is not much business and industry…and sometimes you have to be more creative and flexible in order to find a paying job…like appyling for a camp counselor job, etc. and living at the camp.

He seems to want a “real” job, something that would be more professional…we’ll try, but in this economy, it’s unlikely! Two summers ago, he worked two jobs, one was paid and one was an unpaid internship with a Law firm. Last summer he worked a job in the evenings and hung out with friends during the day.

Looks like we’re going to have a pretty intense few weeks here before he goes back to school. :(

The school’s Career Center should maintain a list of summer internships. Unfortunately, depending on the school, the deadline for application might well have passed if they funnel all applications through a screening process.
