Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

Two years… amazing… The fact that it has lasted reinforces its importance… There will always be Parents of Jewish B Students… and we need one another. Thank you RVM - this has been very helpful and appreciated.

Reading all the posts about upcoming graduation - and the Class of 2012 ready to move on makes me realize that us Parents of the Class of 2013 are next in line. Exciting yet somehow sad.

The end of hs - it is an odd sensation. Tomorrow is S2’s very last day - and mine as well! Prom this weekend - graduation next weekend - exciting/emotional/bittersweet.

RVM, I feel your pain. Everytime someone says it is the “last of” something, my stomach does a flip-flop and I get a little teary-eyed! I had a complete crying jag in November, and have been relatively good since then, but now, I think by graduation on the 5th, I will be a complete mess!

I can only imagine how you all are feeling! My D is a rising senior but I’m already crying for THIS year’s senior class!

RVM- Hope prom is GREAT for your son this weekend.

Maybe it helps to reframe it. Parenting suddenly becomes not so much about the last high school classes/sports/proms, but about the new firsts: first year at college, first trip abroad alone, first job, etc. It’s a whole new world of worry! ;-)

Oh Lord, Sop14! That was so mean! ;-)

SAT scores are in today. I’ve checked D’s but she didn’t know they were in yet. I figured I would tell her to take a look this afternoon. She is grumpy enough in the mornings!
Overall, D kind of did “eh” on take two. Her math score came up 40 points and they were very necessary points but even so, her math score is going to keep her from getting into (or, rather, getting the merit money she would need to attend) her top schools.

So now we will go to the drawing board and take a hard look at what she has and what it indicates her focus should be. She’s a great girl- smart, works hard, compassionate and a leader- so I know she will do just fine in life. She’s miles ahead of where I was at the same age. Loving my kid on the couch! I will not let scores define her, even if the colleges will.

Yeah, well, my kid’s abroad alone and hasn’t bothered to provide me with her new cell number. Hooray for independence (and where are my antacids?).

Thanks for the heads up about the SAT scores; left to his own devices, DS will take his sweet time (and I do mean weeks) before looking at them.

D2 set her alarm for 4:50AM so she could hit the refresh button 50 times before seeing the SAT scores at 5AM. She did well but not as well in Math as we had hoped. The best part is…IT’S OVER!!! Well, not quite. Still have SAT2’s and ACTs but one less thing to think about. For that I am grateful. And thank all of you on this thread (including the founders) for the support and advice that has proved so valuable for D1 and D2. And just in case UMiami adcoms read this thread: “Why oh why won’t you consider Writing SAT scores?”

Haven’t posted here in a while. I wanted to step away from college application issues during my almost a B student’s junior year. She so much wants to go away to college and I just have tried to stay focused on getting her through high school. Just looked at her SAT scores (1st time she took them). Oy. Really, really not good. She won’t have very many (affordable) options. Lots of small LACs would probably admit her but at full cost. How can I even justify (and afford) $50,000 a year for someone who really is not a strong student?

stillnadine: does she need to go to an LAC? What are your in-state public options?

stillnadine, I’m sure you are aware of the list of test optional schools. [SAT/ACT Optional 4-Year Universities | FairTest](ACT/SAT Optional List - Fairtest) We looked at some of these for my bright-but-doesn’t-test-well kid and many of them really do offer decent merit aid.

Two years already?! Wow, it really just seems like last week we were celebrating one year!

I have a story to tell:

When I get the chance I watch this program called “Restaurant Impossible” on the food channel. I got to watch it last night. The premise of the show is for a well known chef to go to a restaurant that is in danger of going out of business and in two days it makes over the restaurant, the menu, the staff, the food and gives it a lift so that it can grow into a successful restaurant! So last night there was an episode coming from Burlington, NC…two miles from Elon University! The restaurant is called University Grill and they had the head of the art dept. and students from the Univ. painting the front walls of the outside of the restaurant. It’s now supposed to be a funky place for college kids and professors to go to eat.

While you Elon folks are visiting your kids, you’ll have to go to this place & check it out and report back here! :)

Btw…I cried more BEFORE my S left for college than after. Now I have him home all summer! It’s a different sort of relationship, though as he matures and is much more independent. And you’re right…there IS more to worry about now…:frowning: But it’s all good…not sure how my mom didn’t worry much at all about her 4 daughters…it was my dad who was the worrier! My mom loved when we had unique experiences! (Two of my sisters were exchange students in foreign countries in h.s. and my other sister & I spent several months in Israel).

SAT angst: Amusing how different they are…

Vitrac’s DD:

So. Very. Unlike. My. Child.

Sop14’s DS:

So like my child.

stillnadine’s DD:

My DH’s sentiments exactly!

vandy’s DD:

Lucky!

Agreed.

my DD: Appears indifferent, which is a defense mechanism against FEAR. Up in M & W, waaaaaaaay down in CR. She needs a nurturing college to bring out her latent abilities. I’m sure they’re in there…somewhere. :)

Yes, test optional. Definatly look into that. Instate options are not good. With her grades/scores, she’d have to go to schools that would not work for a Jewish student (thank you for this forum, where I can be honest about this.)

As for the nuturing LAC, she has found her perfect school: Guilford in NC. And she even may be able to get in with low tests scores beacuse they like students like her. But so expensive. Anyone have any info on solid vocational schools that offer a college experience? Johnson and Wales?

LuvMom- Good on your D to be up in Math and Writing! Aren’t there some colleges that pretty much take the highest of each category? So say a kid scored at 600 once in writing and then 650 on writing the second time, but on the same test flip-flopped in a different area. Won’t some colleges take the Best score from each section? So a 650 and a 650, even though they were different tests?

I distinctly remember that being the case when I went to college. I took the SAT twice I believe and the superscore was the one that got me in.

StillNadine- my cousin’s daughter will be attending Guilford College next year as a freshman. I’m not sure what the merit money situation is like there but I know they had financial need and I assume the college met it in some way or another.

@stillnadine:

If the LACs will not be affordable, and your instate publics are out, then what about OOS publics? They generally run at least 10K less than LACs. Some that I have seen mentioned on this forum for Jewish B students are Indiana U at Bloomington, U of Kansas, U of Delaware, James Madison. What are your geographic constraints?

Is U of Tampa a possibility?..Ditto Kansas…

Also, U of Cincinatti?..

Folks, her M SAT was 380. Even with study and and a 25% improvement, she only gets to 475. CR is 410. She is in an challenging IB program but is really only a C student. She is smart, very insightful, a dream of a child (funny, respectful, responsible, and mature beyond her years, in so many ways.) But she is not a traditional student. Does she really have a chance at an OOS public? I will certainly pursure it but I don’t want to get her hopes up.

stillnadine:

Is this the same D that you were looking at The College of Charleston for?

You may sit her down and talk about the possibilities of going to a Comm. College FIRST, not to eliminate a four year college, but maybe just delay it for a year or so.

Does SoCaldad have any suggestions for you? His D seemed to be in a similar boat gradewise, I think…

Tampa is a low priced private…York in PA as well…
