Champs: Same boat here. 32 ACT (and thrilled with that) but B/B+ gpa. We are limited to schools that are part of my colleges tuition exchange because I do not want to pay for tuition when we could get it covered. My S is interested in computer science. Some of the schools we are considering: RIT(Top choice), Bucknell, WPI and Syracuse we ruled out for reasons pertaining to fit, Bama (2nd Choice), Santa Clara, Fairfield, Villanova, Loyola MD, Drexel, and Rose-Hulman.

I am hoping and praying the boy gets the tuition exchange scholarship at RIT.

socal dad, thanks for the tuition link. Doesnt help me at Delaware but my good friend’s daughter is going to Boulder in the fall so I sent her the info.

My older son is going on Birthright in August. Any tips/pointers for him?

** Meant to add a belated congrats to Rodney for her dau’s job!! I wanted to add my name to the list of schools the kids attended, but since younger s just graduated, I wasnt sure if it was appropriate or not. You are a great group of posters, and I wanted to see if it was still ok to hang out with you guys even though mine ar now officially launced!!

jym626 - you are ALWAYS welcome to hang out here!

chocchip - thanks for mentioning the University Grill - we will have to check it out in August.

stillnadine - what about McDaniel in Maryland? Private school - small size - it’s a fit for B/C students - very supportive environment. Not a large Jewish population - but will meet your goal of being accepting and neutral.

Test Score Ranges (Mid 50%)
Test Name High Low Avg.
ACT Combined: 28 21 24
ACT English:
ACT Math:
ACT Reading:
ACT Science:
SAT Combined: 1820 1505 1662
SAT I Math: 610 500 555
SAT I Critical Reading: 610 510 560

From national Naviance - note that 25% of students would have SAT scores below 500. It may even be test optional - I don’t remember off hand. This is the type of school where you can sit down with the admissions director and speak with her one on one. The daughter of the college advisor at my son’s hs went here and she was very pleased.

Link from their website with more admissions stats:

LuvMomN8ur, she’ll be home in a week and a half. It’s been a good experience but she’s ready for it to end. We’ll have her home briefly (just long enough to do the laundry) before she flies out to camp for staff week. She is eager to get down to the business of classroom learning in college.

Stillnadine, another private school that might fit your dd is Hood College in Maryland. It is small and closer to you and has a Jewish Student Union. I have no idea about the school. It just came up when I was searching Westfield for kids from my dd’s high school. No idea about merit either.

StillNadine- How is College of Charleston? Have you been happy with your D’s education there? Has she liked it? Is it pretty laid back for a Southern school or is it a Pearls and Sundresses school? How is the drinking culture there?

Spectrum-Thanks for answering my question Re: Superscoring. It was helpful!

Luvmom- Seeing that list of college prices just depresses me. I know merit figures in and stuff but just LOOKING at numbers like 40K makes me want to stick my head in the sand. Ugh.

Tuition specialists- Okay, I am totally intrigued by this. What is there to lose? Fascinating. I will be all over this site as soon as I get caught up here.

Champs- Congratulations on the awesome ACT score! That’s great!

Please excuse my ignorance… Do colleges post their requirements for subject tests? It would be helpful to know what scores colleges desire for the subject tests. Sorry - I really don’t know where to find this information!

You guys are soo sweet. I didn’t just join. I’ve been on for a while. I just cant keep up with you guys!!!

Happy to share any Tulane info if that would help. we also visited CofC and have friends who go/went there, so can give some help. A friends son (jewish), who just graduated, was student body pres.

LOL- I looked to see when I posted previously- and saw “5/27” I thought “wait -that’s tomorrow”. Then noticed it was from 2010!! This thread has been incredible!

phillyartmom - if your hs has Naviance - it displays the results for your specific hs - and then if you click on the admissions tab - it shows you all results that the college reports - similar to what you would see in their Common Data Set.

stillnadine, I think yours is not an easy question. My first question is whether she is ready to go to college and put out the major league effort that will probably be required. If not, maybe a gap year is in order and I’d be reluctant to pay huge amounts of money when she wasn’t geared up to work. If so, is she more indifferent in areas that don’t excite her but does better in areas that excite her? If so, she might do well at a school that is less traditional? Is she more concrete and less abstract? My daughter ShawD did well enough on tests and is bright but is much more concrete than abstract and wasn’t happy until she switched from biology to nursing. Would a more concrete focus help?

I’m not sure if S2 is the first of the 2012’s to graduate, but graduation for us was today and I wanted to share that it was a beautiful day. Tears only when our validictorian herself became teary. Mostly it was a day of pride and celebration. While my two kids are usually miles apart I was touched by the brotherly support, humor, advice and admiration that S1 showed S2 in a graduation note. There is a feeling of triumph with the success and happiness that concluded a year with challenges. It was one of those days that it is a joy to be a parent. I wish I could bottle this! I hope that all of you looking forward to a graduation in the next few days or weeks find it similarly satisfying.

Vandy: CofC has been wonderful for my DS. Very relaxed. Sundresses, yes, because it can be really hot but worn with Chacos, never pearls. East Coast, casual, hip, in an elegant southern setting, if that makes sense. Having so many OOS students helps, so thanks y’all for sending your DC down here. Any specific questions, I’d be happy to answer.

Birthright: DS went last summer with through CofC. Great experience. No problems (well, no more that anyone would have traveling overseas: phone and bank card issues, easily resolved.)

At a party last night, discussing the issue of spending $200,000+ on college for kids who are not “students.” Interesting to hear about the successes/failures and imaging all the ways you could use that money to “launch” your child’s future success. My DD is great with animals, has worked for the last year at a doggy day care center. Doubtful she could ever be a vet but she could own her own DDCC. Imagine what $$$ could do to get her started. Not saying she wants to go this route but just trying to stay open to the possibilities.
