My dd has had her mac for about 4 years. The only replacement was that the bottom shell started to come off, which apparently has been a problem for some. It was replaced with no argument. My dd’s school gives everyone a new mac at the beginning of first year (art school and they want everyone to have fully loaded similar machines), so I will be the beneficiary of her old mac!! I have an Ipad and phone, so it will be nice to be consistent.

Wow, Book of Mormon tickets out til next May? That is crazy. But I may have to get them–sick of waiting in the lottery every time we go to NYC!

Best of luck to the kids taking the ACT tomorrow!! (Well, scratch that, I guess it would be today now.)
BEST OF LUCK to all kids taking the ACT TODAY!!!

Just spent some time at a graduation party where one mom was bragging about what school her dear son should deign to attend after he applies next fall…she thinks all the top schools will just be falling all over themselves to have her dear son grace their campus in the fall of 2013.

Her son is your average BWRK…

He has over a 4.0 weighted gpa
He is on the baseball team
He has a 2140 SAT…
and…
he volunteers one morning a month when the homeless shelter is open at their shul.

He can’t decide whether he would like Yale or Princeton better.

Oy! This is definitely one of those “smile and nod” situations - as reality will hit them in a few months and you’ll see how her tune changes then! Unless he does get in and then she will be really insufferable!

Hope the ACT went well today for those in testing mode - keep us posted!

I got the typical answer from DS yesterday when I picked him up from the ACT. “it was ok.”

He had been focusing on the science this week and had come across one practice test that was really hard. He didn’t think the real thing yesterday was as bad as that one. Time will tell.

That’s too bad about Koach. Delaware has Koach, but I don’t know if there are a lot of students involved. DD not involved as we are not conservative.

Boysx3- I’m not sure I could have controlled myself… Instead of smile and nod I think I would have been Nod and Smirk. ;-)

It’s been a pretty good weekend around here. Very hot. We went hiking a bit yesterday and that wore everyone out. I’m doing a low carb jag right now and today I hit the cranky wall. Everyone but the dogs are hiding from me!

About to leave with the boys to go see a band with the cousins. D is on a driving lesson (last one! Test later this month) and then going to youth group.

Tomorrow is the first day of summer. D still doesn’t really have a plan. If I have learned one thing this year, it is to not let her be in charge of planning her own summer ever. again.

My D passed her Lifeguarding/CPR/First Aid certification today (including how to deliver a baby {!}). Very proud of her. And will work this summer as a lifeguard. Her first real job. I think it will be a very good experience for her.

But if you’re swimming while she’s on duty - I wouldn’t jump into the deep end quite yet. ;)

I am so proud of how I did manage to control myself…!

Especially as the mom in question was somewhat snide about the graduate being honored at the party was “only” going to attend the University of Michigan (as an out of state applicant) who was accepted into an honors program there. (The graduate wanted large, rah-rah sports, excellent academics, and a Jewish population of some size, including the possibility of Jewish greek life…Obviously Michigan fits his bill)

I certainly hope her son has some options as nice as Michigan honors next spring, and that the GC talks some sense in to the mom as far as realistic applications.

I am familiar with Koach - it is basically United Synagogue’s (ie Conservative movement’s) college program – and i think it is a very sad turn of events. They had been cutting the budget as it was – and students have been trying to organize in support of Koach to show how important it is to them. This year’s Koach Kallah, a national convention for college students involved with Koach, had a phenomenal turn out. Personally, I think the worst aspect of this is the message that is sent – it makes kids involved in Koach feel that United Synagogue doesn’t care about them. I don’t think it bodes well for the future of the Conservative movement if it abandons the very college students who are most interested in maintaining an active connection with that movement during college.

Just checking in since I am not on here too much, but will be back soon with D2 (rising Jr.)

My thoughts regarding Koach are as follows: for a program that only costs $225k from what I assume is a multi million dollar budget it makes sense to cut this entire program for one reason only. This will hit a nerve. Some philanthropist will step forward to fund this entire program for only $225K. It will probably be a multi year, multi million dollar grant. I don’t know any spefics, this is all conjecture on my part. And it’s a nice warm fuzzy program to endow. In the world of major philanthropic donations, it’s not a huge amount to fund an entire program. So I say stay tuned, I don’t think that the conservative movement can really turn their backs on college students. They have enough trouble keeping them engaged to begin with.
