Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

i thought I would share a good resource. It is a weekly newsletter designed for guidance counselors and college advisors. It is free, and anyone can sign up. It offers a weekly email with articles from various publications. It comes out each wednesday. I found it to be an interesting resource. You might check it out and sign up for the newsletter. They offer four versions by region.

Hope it helps some of you, as you continue the journey.

[High School Counselor Week](http://www.hscounselorweek.com)

HouTXmom: Bryn Mawr, Agnes Scott (has small Hillel but possibly connects with larger population in ATL, Goucher- not female only now, Hood… all may be ones to look into?

I had DS register for common app a few days ago. Today, we took our first look and it looked kind of scary!

Our very large and competitive high school does not rank, thank god. So that was not a problem for any of the kids here. Shulamit, once you get going, the Common App is not so bad. But, make sure you check for supplemental essays/etc. For my dd, that was the most difficult thing.

Thanks, will do! BTW, does anyone have any thoughts or info on Wheaton in Mass?

Pennylane, DD has Bryn Mawr on her list. We visited last spring and it was gorgeous! Also, it has good financial aid according to their net price calculator. They also do award merit money.

Thanks SoCalDad. I signed up. Looks like great info on that site!

Vandy,

Over the last year, I read some very good articles on the newsletter. I forward many to other parents. Enjoy…

"For high schools that rank, a student needs to report their class rank on the common application. some schools are late in reporting that information to students, which is what this conversation was about. "

 • Some schools do nt rank at all. D’s HS did not rank, no vals, no sals either. When I asked college rep. during info session, they said that it is determined by adcom using student GPA and class profile. So, I imagine that you could add this info later or indicate that it is an estimate. And anyway, it is important for very selective programs (for top 2% or so). I cannot imagine what difference would it be in making top 20% or top 50%. Top 2% is very easy to estimate.

Our school doesn’t rank, but they do deciles. It’s a very competitive school that weights grades, so even A students don’t rank very high unless they have taken a boatload of APs.I remember that my older son had an avg in the low 90s, I think, and I was shocked that he wasn’t in the top HALF of his class (it came up for a merit scholarship at a college).
BTW, regarding the common app, will it save DS’s info from the first school and import it to the next?

@shulamit- the common app only needs to be completed once, and then it is used for each school. However, each school usually has its own supplement that needs to be completed in additional to the common app itself.

The place we ran into the most problems on the common app was the page where the student has to list their 10 most significant activities in order of importance (extra curricular, community service, athletics, work, etc) and provide a brief explanation (there’s not much space for the explanation, and the applicant need to make sure you save your work as you go along). If your son or daughter has an activity resume, he/she can also upload that as supplemental information, if you want to provide more detail.

pamom59 - Just read your post pamom, is S supposed to fill out activities in “order of importance” or chronological? I assumed he should put most current first? Do all schools have supplementals?

A few things I remember from D filling out the common app from last year. For the EC’s it’s supposed to be in order of importance to them.

Also, you can save as you go and then go back in and fill in the missing info later. You can also duplicate the common app if you need to. D applied to some safety schools first and then after we looked at the common app again, we decided to make some changes. Just make a note of which version was submitted to which school.

Not all schools have supplements. When you select the schools you are applying to, it will let you know if there is a supplement. When in doubt, check the college admissions website. We did that a lot.

Also, make sure you preview everything before sending it to a school. Some weird things do happen, so best to look at it to see what the school will see before sending it off.

Good luck to all of the seniors working on their common apps. Don’t miss it at all! Not looking forward to this time next year, when D2 has to get started!

@shulamit - it was a list in order of importance, not chronological. it also required you to say the number of hours per week and weeks per year for each activity.

You might want to take a look at the pdf of the common app and instructions which are available here https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/DownloadForms.aspx

things do change from year to year so it is best to check this year’s format requirements.

Well dd is packed! 5 large suitcases and 2 carry ons. That left one suitcase and carry ons for me and dh. Luckily everything will go on Southwest and no charge for the bags. Got everything in, including her art supplies. Only her drawing board did not fit; it was just too wide for the luggage, so we will buy that. The only other stuff is sitting at BBB in Florida, a fridge being delivered and whatever stuff we need at CVS.

We used a lot of space bags and they were incredible in opening up space so that the bigger problem became weight.

I hope everyone else has as easy a time at the packing!

Gee whiz, phillyartmom…I haven’t been on this thread in at least a week or so. We just came home from a very nice dinner w/friends and I’m seeing this post of yours…Best of luck to you & your D! How exciting and emotional at the same time! Wow, she sounds like she’s going to a great school and has a great future ahead of her.
Good luck with her move in and hope you & H are okay coming back home…don’t start looking at real estate to rent or buy down there! She’ll be fine and so will you. Give yourself time to get used to the change. I told you before that I was a wreck before we moved our S in to his dorm, but everything turns out fine and you do get used to the quiet, and the less laundry, and the less food shopping…etc! And then they come back home again! My grocery bill radically changed when he returned home in May! ;)

GOOD LUCK to your D…we are all pulling for a great freshman year for her…and for you!

Good luck phillyartmom! Have a great trip. Sounds like you have it all under control.

We head up to school at the end of the week, I hope our packing goes as smoothly as yours!

Good luck Phillyartmom! I hope you have an easy move-in. Choc givesgood advice on how to handle the change. It’s a big transition for you and your D.

Happy packing to mdmomfromli. It’s a good thing that I don’t have to deal with a freshman launch this year while I’m during a real world launch with D1.

Good luck to all who are launching! College freshman through real world… it’s all a BIG deal… wonderful milestones… enjoy!

wow… can’t believe launch time is here! GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU!!! Wishing you and your kids a smooth, easy transition… enjoy - and remember we’re here for you!!!
