Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

Jayne, I think that your D’s GPA and ACT score would get her fall admission if she were in-state. I was told that you need about a 1250 with strong GPA to get in for fall. I’m not sure how much tougher OOS admissions are, but Maryversity’s point about location makes sense. I think that your D will have a very good shot for fall admission if she can raise her ACT score a point or two. My D2 has several friends who just finished the first year in Freshman Connection. The program has it’s good and bad points, but they are all happy that they choose UMD.

Welcome back C43!

For anyone interested, the Reform Jewish Magazine’s 7th Annual Insider’s Guide to College Life is now available. Here’s the URL:

It’s interesting to see which colleges are advertising in the magazine. Of course, the college lists are informative too.

Thanks for all the great information. I’m hoping my D’s ACT scores will improve a few points, which could help for Fall admission…who knows? We live in Rhode Island. I know a few kids got into Maryland from my D’s HS this year, all January admittance…one is doing the Freshmen Connection so we’ll follow that option closely.

Hard to believe S2 launches this week! Thank you to everyone who helped with his college search and the whole process.

Good luck with the launch, RVM. I hope things go well.

Good luck, rockvillemom! Hope your son has a great first year at Elon!

I am actually rather melancholy today thinking about all the “lasts” I have coming up. S2 is home this week for a 4 day visit, and next week goes back to start the last year of his master’s program. It’s definitely that he visits his mom, and lives in DC…he is a man and not a child any more. I’m not “home” any more. And S3 is traveling a few days on a special trip with H, and then also returning to DC–as a college senior.

S1 just celebrated his third wedding anniversary…!

Where did my 3 little boys go?

A weird week here for us as well D1 is has been back at school for senior year for two weeks(I drove 1450 miles with her) and D2 leaves Wednesday. The goodbyes to her friends have been bittersweet. Lots of tears among the kids.

Like RVM, the help we received here was amazing. Both supportive, informative, and encouraging. Thanks to all who shared their wisdom, and I will follow the journeys that are upcoming…

In the meantime, the kleenex will be by my Wife’s side…

Hi there everyone. Well, my one and only is launched! It took 6 suitcases on Southwestern, not being able to see out of the back of the rented SUV with all the luggage, a great pick up at BBB and three trips to Target, and she was in! Her school does orientation starting the day after move-in, so we were busy for the last three days going to sessions with and without dd. This is an art school and the class info was incredible. Lots of talk about how class work was not enough to cut it, that every time the kid reads, shoots a photo, watches a movie, looks out a window, an analysis is to take place. Also, just doing homework and class work will not an artist make. Dd LOVED it. She took it all in and is ready.

During the week, we spent time with her and she also went off with her new art geek friends. They were all so happy together! I have to say, that by the time we left, having watched her interacting for 4 days, it was easier to leave her then if we had just dropped her off. So, there were some glassy eyes for our family, but no tears. Others were having lots of difficulties. I know that I will have down times and need to really figure out what I want to do with my time, as I quit my job in December to spend more time with dd! Dh had no trouble leaving, but he already says he misses her and we just flew back this morning.

We could not get her to talk to the rabbi for the area Hillel (very small school, so they share). She is just not interested. So, we did not push much!

I have to say that she is going to school in the most gorgeous place. The school is in Sarasota Florida and everywhere you drive you see the beautiful water. The school itself is a 40 acre campus for 1300 students, with lots of little yellow, orange and blue buildings that look like old Hollywood studios! I can’t imagine how wonderful it will be when it is snowing up here!

I have to say all the advice here made the move in so easy (along with all the other support). The packing lists I found on CC, the support and suggestions of everyone here, made it all happen. We were moved in in 2 hours, except for the extra trips! We had water and soda ready, but never needed it.

I will come back later with tips that we found helpful, but for now, I just wanted to report and say with all my heart, thanks to all of you!

phillyartmom, it is so nice to learn that it all went so smoothly.

Having your kids leave home is so tough (especially when they are very far from home), but I have found that when they are very happy that really takes away a lot of the sting!

RVM, I just read your post about your son launching soon. Good luck to him!

Phillyartmom, I’m glad to hear that things went so well. I wish I could spend the next 4 years in Sarasota.

I understand how you’re feeling Boysx3. I’ve really enjoyed having both of my D’s home this summer, but I know that this is probably the last tme that D1 will be here for an extended period of time. As Northeastmom said, it is easier when your kids are doing well.

Good luck to Socaldad’s D, RVM’s S and all the others launching in the next few weeks.

Hurray for phillyartmom and her D! Sarasota is a beautiful town. Now you have ample opportunity to visit!

Keep us posted rvm and socaldad.

Good luck RVM and Socaldad. Socaldad, we live about an hour from UDel and can be available if your dd needs anything. We also have a friend whose son goes there and he is a great guy. He was drum majoy of our band and now plays at UDel. If your dd needs a friend, I can put her in touch with him.

phillyartmom: So glad that everything so well at Ringling. Love hearing how happy “our” kids are at their new home.

Such a nice gesture PhillyArtmom. I will remember the offer, and hope that she thrives and doesn’t need it…

I too have been to Sarasota. A great place. The Keyes are great. And the shopping area is quaint. A nice place to love and visit for 4 years. I hope your D loves it.

Socaldad. If she wants to meet Jamie, just let me know. He is one of the nicest boys I know. Happy to help in any way I can.

There is a mom that I met on another thread who was so helpful to me with dd’s questions about Ringling. When we were down in Florida for accepted student’s day, we took her dd to dinner, and this last week, we had dinner with the mom (whom I had not yet met) and the dd! And, the mom is going to be back at school in about a week and told my dd that she would be happy to take her around if there were any little things she needed!

It is always nice to have someone else looking after your child. It does take a village!

What an exhausting few days, but D is all settled in and loving college so far. Of course classes haven’t begun yet, so what’s not to love…LOL! Good luck RVM and everyone else who is getting ready to launch.

I want to be happily/bittersweetly/sadly launching! This application process is draining and overwhelming…and we’ve only just begun. Calgon, take me away!

A year from now, we will (G-d willing  ) be launching happily matched college students, be reaching for the empty-nest tears tissue box and have amounted a large Target and BBB bill on the charge card for dorm stuff.
