Yes many students from Cherry Hill go to Towson. Our naviance shows this: 2010, 76 applied, 62 accepted, 14 enrolled. For the SAT 2400, 5.0 weighted, 1700. For the ACT 4.93 weighted, 22.

I hear many great things about Towson. I believe it is an affordable college. I think it attracts a well mix of “safety” and “good fit” students. I can’t wait to hear your recap of your visit.

momjr - thanks so much - that was very helpful. I’m also hoping that involvement in Hillel would be a good way to be connected at Towson and get that sense of community. Do/did any of the kids you know participate in Hillel? I also agree with you on the business program - having a mimimum GPA is fine - I have no issue with that - it’s the idea that you could have the required GPA and still not be accepted (like at JMU) that bothers me.

So, I’m hoping that Towson and maybe York College will function as S2’s academic/financial safety schools. Not a tremendous Jewish presence at York - but everything else fits pretty well. Still undecided about Tampa and Florida in general. I also think S2 has an excellent chance of being accepted at College of Charleston - but not sure if he is strong enough to consider it a safety school.

cherryhill - thanks for the info - I would never have guessed Towson had so many NJ students. I grew up in NJ - so it doesn’t scare me off! :)

Here’s the info on the website about the forced triples:

“Keep in mind theres a chance youll be assigned to a triple or discounted room. Heres what to expect:
Tripled Rooms for Fall Semester- Some Glen Complex double rooms will be temporarily expanded to triples. Students assigned to triples will receive a pro-rated refund once the rooms are returned to double occupancy. All rooms will be de-tripled by spring semester.
Discounted Rooms - some students assigned to discounted rooms (located in Residence Tower) will be asked to remove all personal belongings at the end of the fall semester to accommodate athletes and Minimester students during winter break. Students who return for the spring semester will receive a $250 credit to their account.
Overflow Rooms - Some students will be temporarily assigned to overflow housing. These rooms are normally used as study lounges or rec rooms. They will be furnished to accommodate students until a permanent assignment becomes available. Students will receive a pro-rated refund once assigned to a permanent room.”

Just wanted to pop in and comment about the triples. My older son was tripled (six years ago now - wow) his freshman year. After sucking up my own devastation, I visited and found that they had managed to purchase a couch and wiggle it into the room. In other words, they managed. The biggest problem was dust, and that one of the kids was an utter slob. (The old “mix the clean laundry with the dirty laundry in a big pile” syndrome.) While it was a big challenge for DS (especially at first dealing with his own fear when first realizing he was in a forced triple) it worked out and provided another set of life lessons. He is very neat now, lol.

And I also realize housing issues exist pretty much everywhere - I have read stories of forced triples - or being temporarily housed in a converted lounge or motel at many schools. It also would depend on the size of the room - S1 had a typical double at his college freshman year - but the room was so tiny they had to bunk the beds - it would have been impossible to have them both on the floor. S2 is very laid back and flexible - this is not the type of issue that would bother him too much.

I’m sorry I wasn’t clear. When I looked at Naviance - I went to the drop down box for the SAT/2400. The data shows that the average was a GPA weighted avg to be 5.66 and the SAT score average was 1800.

When I went to the ACT drop down box the data showed the gpa average was 4.93 and ACT score average was 22.

That’s an interesting grading scale - is it a 6 point scale? Seems to be a more unusual one. Our Naviance still shows 2009 - no 2010 yet - I thought it was updating today - but maybe it is tonight. Oh well.

To add perspective on the NJ influx to Towson, Cherry Hill has 2 large high schools (at least)–if CHmom’s stats are just from of those schools, you can sense the overall popularity.

With 42 applications from 2 Cherry Hill HS’s, clearly that regional admissions rep for Towson deserves a promotion! The entire NJ state system may not draw 42 applications from any 2 neighboring MD HS’s.

If he continues with that gpa he will get into cofc if his test scores are 27 or higher I would think (also I have heard really good things about the Jewish Frat at cofc). Lehigh would be a extreme stretch I looked at applying there. I would think he is in at Elon easier then cofc. Both are good schools. Encourage your son to do extra curricula’s. At least join some clubs because even then you do not have to participate and it makes your resume a lot better. Community service club, spanish club, and other academic and sports teams if possible.

I would tend to agree that C of C is easier than Elon. I think he would get into to C of C - but I don’t want to make any assumptions or take anything for granted. I’d rather he apply to more safety schools than needed than apply to too few. I am hoping that he can score a 28 on the ACT - he is actually practicing right now!

Incidentally - the self-study on the ACT is going well - if you have a motivated kid (or one who realizes mom is not going to let this drop so it is easier just to do it) it really can work. My older son did just one ACT practice test - and his composite score on the real exam was identical to the practice exam score. So I have confidence in the predictive value of the practice tests. So much of the ACT is about timing - and that is something you can improve upon. So far, S2’s practice exams have scored 27s and 28s in English and math, and a surprising 34 in science! Reading is the section he has really struggled with and we are working on that this afternoon. He has made progress - the first time he did it - he only finished about 50% of the test and scored a 21. He can now finish the entire section! So - so far so good on the self-study process.

Rockvillemom,
I know several Jewish kids who attend or attended Towson, but I only know of one that was involved in Hillel. She has had a great experience and also helped start at Jewish sorority. They appear to have a very active Hillel.

One suggestion for ACT prep. After my daughter completed the “Real ACT Prep Guide”, she used the Kaplan guide. She thought that the Kaplan guide had a lot of good tips.

For anyone whose child has only taken the SAT and isn’t thrilled with his or her scores, I highly recommend having them try the ACT. My daughter scored much higher on the ACT. She likes the test better and thought it was easier. All colleges will accept scores from either test, and we’ve found a few that will accept an ACT score in place of SAT subject tests.

momjr - thank you for suggesting the Kaplan guide - he actually finished the Real ACT book today and I was not sure what to do next - so your timing is perfect. I agree with you 100% about the ACT. My older son is an “A” student and a great test taker - he did very well on the SAT - but even better on the ACT - so I am a believer. With S2 - his PSAT scores were abysmal - in both 9th and 10th grades. So, I was greatly relieved when he took the PLAN in 10th grade and scored a 26 - way better than his 2 PSATs.

Thanks also for the Towson input - I am getting such mixed feedback on Towson! But we still plan to see it next week - and for now it is on the list as a safety school.

A hearty congratulations to Rockville Mom’s son for completing the ACT prep book. He is certainly a role model studying hard for the test. Mazal tov to Rockville Mom for being a great mother!

Isn’t it bizarre? I woke up at 7am and thought I had dreamed feeling the house shake - then my sister called from the midwest to make sure we were ok. We barely felt it - nothing fell or broke - the dog even slept through it! As my son said, would not even be a news story in California.

mdcissp - thanks for your kind words on the ACT prep - but I don’t want to get ahead of myself - we’ll see how he actually does in September.
