Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

Thanks Jozuko! D2 could land anywhere at this point, including Tulane. Still hoping we will meet for beignets and coffee–scratch that–we’ll need something stronger.

I wanted to repost something LaFalum84 posted in 2011 that stuck with me and describes what many of us are going through:

“Don’t put your college in a square state, or NJ. Don’t put it out in the sticks. Or in an urban area. Don’t make all the buildings look alike. Don’t make all the buildings look different - there should be a theme. But it shouldn’t be Georgian or modern or gothic or Mission Style (aka Taco Bell). Don’t have too much parking in the middle of campus. Don’t make it so there’s no where to park. Be sure your tour guides aren’t too preppy or goth or sloppy or fashionable or dumb or snotty or boring or overly-enthusiastic. Make sure they share their own experiences and feelings but don’t let them talk about themselves. Be sure your football team is great - but be sure NOT to have a football team. Don’t put your campus on a hill, but make sure it is hilly. Make sure there are no Southern accents, but the weather is warm and sunny year round, except for the lovely fall and change of seasons and a little bit of pretty snow - but it can’t be cold when it snows. It can’t have tornadoes or hurricanes or earthquakes. Make sure your info session and tour guides talk about classes and majors, as long as its the major the tour-ee is interested in. Don’t be TOO welcoming or too organized - you’ll look like you’re trying too hard. Don’t be disorganized. If you have Greek life, make sure no one sees it - unless they’re looking for it, in which case make sure there are plenty of kids with Greek letters walking around. And for heavens’ sake, make sure you have a normal mascot but not a boring one, and make sure your school colors look good on everyone and match everyone’s outfits!”

OMG, that is priceless! And with your list of acceptances, I think you have it covered!

Congrats Vitrac. If you visit, and need to meet some more frosh girls, I got you covered…

You da best, socal!

I wanted to share a Birthright story: DS went through confirmation class and then decided he did not want to be confirmed. Later DS went through a year of Hebrew High School in preparation for for a summer long community youth trip to Israel only to decide he would rather spend the summer working and being with his friends. Then in December he decided to go on a Birthright trip with his Hillel at University of Missouri. Missouri! It was in his words “a unbelievable experience”. “the best trip ever”. Now he is applying for a summer internship in Israel and searching for a scholarship to help make it happen. Go figure.

Any thoughts on the undergraduate business programs at Bentley, Bryant, Quinnipiac, and Binghamton?

Thanks for sharing your Birthright story, Pushydad. Those trips really do help kids feel connected to Judaism and Israel. I hope your son gets that internship and scholarship.

Bently is a business school- my friends daughter was rejected with a 3.2. Naviance placed it at 3.7 if I remember correctly. Binghamton has an outstanding program. We just took a tour and they told us that their School of Management is the hardest to get into. They only admit 200 kids per year. My other friend’s daughter is a freshman at Quinnipiac and is happy. She just changed her major to business. She graduated HS as a low B student. Don’t know anything about Bryant.

Congrat Vitrac!

S1 was accepted yesterday to Computer Science- his 2nd choice at UT/Austin. First choice was ECE. He was very disappointed. Think he will go elsewhere where he can be in engineering. Friday he found out that he was selected to honors ECE program at U of IL (UIUC). He is disappointed but still has good choices to make: UIUC, Case Western, Miami of Ohio, UT (not ECE, though)…It should be an interesting decision.

Thanks Too Tired!! All good choices and I bet by this point you are truly too tired to care.

I went to Bryant in the 80s. My group of friends all got good jobs at graduation. At this time, they are:

VP of Tax for Fortune 500 company
VP of major office furniture mfg
VP of Wall Street firm
VP of sales for aircraft manufacturer
CEO of major aircraft parts distributor
VP of cargo for major airline
Tax attorney
Principal of large insurance agency
President of large payroll firm
General manager of a large Hyatt
VP of real estate development firm
High end commercial realtor

I’d say Bryant served us all well.

On the other side of Chardo’s chart, I went to UCLA undergrad and law school and now I am a personal chef and Pampered Chef consultant! You never know what you will end up doing! ;)

It’s official! DS just sent in the deposit to Tulane! We are so excited. He doesn’t even want to wait for the last two schools on the list (Emory and U Del). I kind of think that he has known all along that Tulane is the right choice for him, but he was waiting for it to really sink in. Next step…ordering tee shirts, sweatshirts and coffee mugs off the school’s Bookstore website! Trying to find the coupon code (he already has $200 of stuff in the cart!). Anyone have any idea how I can find the code?
Vitrac and Linymom, I see us eating beignets at Cafe Dumond together in the near future!

jozuko: MAZEL TOV! I AM SO EXCITED FOR YOU (YES, I AM YELLING).

However, I will likely be drinking pina coladas in South Beach next year. We had an unbelievable visit at Miami last week and DS has said he is “probably” going there. He still feels that he has to wait for Hopkins and Lehigh (RPI still to come too, but he told me that’s off the table).

I think that vitrac has absoutely no idea where her DD will end up… could be beignets with you, pina coladas with me, or whatever they eat/drink in Michigan and Texas!

I’m dying to stock up on new college gear! Just waiting for DS to say the word!

^^^^what LINY said!!! My head may explode before may 1. But congrats to you, Jozuko! I am green with envy.

Congrats Jozuko! What a great choice. I was in New Orleans recently and think it will a great place for a student to attend college and an amazing place for parents to visit. It seems like Tulane students are incredibly happy. Best of luck to your S.

I’m excited to see where the other '13s end up. Vitrac, your D reminds me of my niece. She had a lot of good choices and took until the wire to make a decision. It seems like yesterday, but she graduates this spring.

thanks all! it’s been fun being on this ride with you all! Can’t wait to see where everyone ends up!

Congrats Jozuko. NOLA is a great city to spend four years in.
Linymom, Miami sounds good to me…
Vitrac…good wishes, and I have a house to sell in Texas…

I need to look into Tulane for my son, hadn’t really thought about it. Had a meeting with my son to go over some options and he is not interested in Elon based on what he sees on the web?? Clearly I didn’t sell it well. He is very interested in Colorado College which shocks me, but I also really like it for him. Did anyone here see it, look into it or know anyone there? Right now he is interested in CU boulder, UVM, Miami. Colorado College, and will consider Rollins or Eckerd and maybe Quinnipiac but not very excited about it. I think U Conn and U mass are out? I’m still to feeling we have hit upon the right list for him?

Congratulations Jozuko!! I think Tulane would be a great place to be and of course, who doesn’t want to visit NOLA? Good luck to Vit and Linymom, it is so hard to wait! Momentscaught, we have a neighbor whose dd goes to Colorado College. She absolutely loves it there and has been extremely happy. But one thing to caution, is that if you have a child that gets sick and is out for any length of time with flus, etc, it is probably not a good choice, as the class session is so short–so missing more than one day ever may mean not finishing that class.

The neighbor is not Jewish, so I have no idea what the culture is there.
