Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

Linymom - Your son should be so proud of himself! He has many wonderful acceptances, and btw, he got waitlisted at RPI - not rejected! He should take pride in this accomplishment!

Let him know that champs think he’s a champ (couldn’t resist)!

Thank you all for your support. Really, he’s over it. He was brought down to earth a bit after all the great results he’s had so far. That’s not a bad thing. He told someone at a meeting tonight that his top choices are Miami and Tulane. With a smile. It’s all good!

Liny…the rejections hurt their egos, but only for a minute (especially if they are not their dream schools). DS really wanted Miami or Tulane since the beginning, but the rejections from UNC and UT Austin stung for a minute. Today, he got the U Delaware acceptance (with some $$ which was exciting for about 5 minutes). But our decision is made…Tulane, here we come! DS even wore his Tulane sweatshirt to school today! We have not even heard from Emory yet and would still love to get in, but the bottom line is, you choose the school that is right for you. I’m thinking that UM is in your future :)

liny: Sorry about the RPI waitlist. Our kids definitely have a lot of ego tied up in the application process but in the end it only really matters where they go & that they are happy & successful at their chosen school. And we are fortunate that even with a few disappointments they still have decisions to make.

Pkdof13: I firmly believe that my S did not aim high enough. We still have one school to hear from (CMU) and that is his one real long shot. Financially he will not be able to attend without merit $$ which are unlikely even if he is accepted so the whole thing seems moot to him.

Jozuko: I envy that the decision is made and that your S is happy! My S just announced that he would like to visit UIUC and CWR AGAIN before he makes the decision. I guess April will be a busy month for us.

Good luck to all those still waiting for decisions…and $$.

Linymom: Glad to hear that your S is over the RPI waitlist. He can only attend one school, and he’s got some great options.

NEinNC: Good luck with your college visits. My nephew attends McDaniel. It’s a very nice, nurturing school, but it is very small and isolated. Most of the students live in Maryland and a lot of them go home on the weekends. I don’t think it would be the best choice for an OOS student.

momjr…I’m glad to see your input on McDaniel. It is a school we’ve been considering for my S2, but the isolation concerned me along w/ the fact that they don’t provide any kind of shuttle service for the kids to go into Baltimore. In so many ways it seems like a great fit for my son, but not if the small campus clears out on the weekends.

Umich! Good to “see” you posting! You & I have juniors, huh?

Liny! Good luck with Miami and Tulane. Jozuko: Good luck with Tulane. What about Vitrac? All other seniors good luck with your respective acceptances too!

Liny: My S2 decided not to bother with RPI either. It would have been his one big reach, and he decided he didn’t want to bother applying and then have the classes be way to difficult for him. But hearing that your S was deferred, then my S definitely would have been rejected.

pkd: congrats on 9 acceptances!

I can’t believe I’m gearing up for another senior year, yikes. Hope to do more college visits during April vacation. Trying to arrange to sit in on some classes too.

LINYMOM,
You and your son should feel very proud of his admits. One wait list is really no big deal, and I agree with the sentiment that it shows that he was aiming at the right level.

You can also look at it from my perspective, which is that I wish my son were able to apply to reaches, but because he has health concerns, we know he can only apply to schools that are small, not overwhelming academically, and not too far from home. It would feel great if he could aim so high as to apply to schools that were more challenging in admissions and rigor, but we have to be realistic about his limitations.

So from all perspectives, I think you have a lot to celebrate and many, many good choices. I wish your sone much mazel tov and I am sure he will be very happy and successful and enjoy much better weather at Miami or Tulane.

We returned from Tulane Honors Weekend to discover D2 was awarded a Community Service Scholarship, on top of her original generous merit award. We are deeply honored and humbled by this and it has clinched the deal for Tulane. She had great choices and a few notable rejections. When all is said and done, Tulane is a great fit, academically, socially and financially. We are all just so happy for her and so glad this crazy process is finally over.

Vitrac!!! That is soooo awsome! I’m so happy for you (and D2!). I just booked our flights and hotel for the June 10 & 11 orientation. When are you going?

Vitrac, that is great!!! Congratulations on the award and on making the decision!

Congrats Vitrac! Awesome!

You are all so awesome. I just wrote about the RPI waitlist to keep you posted and you are all so positive! For my son who thinks he is just one of the guys from The Big Bang Theory, it was just a bump in the road. He is going to do well wherever he goes. With the choices he has already, he will in no way be “settling.”

Vitrac: It was all I could do not to post your news while you were flying home last night. SO SO SO excited for you and your family.

Jaynebe: Where are you? Need an update on your DS!

Vitrac - congratulations - wonderful news!

Vitrac, that’s fantastic news!

Congrats Vitrac, more great news from our CC minyan. Would you mind sharing the details of Tulane’s merit award?

Congratulations, Vitrac! That’s awesome news. I thought your D2 was going to end up at Miami with my D2, but you must be thrilled that she chose Tulane. Good luck! And at least my D1 is in a 5 year master program there so I still have a few more years to visit New Orleans.

Thanks, chocchipcookie. While I haven’t been posting a lot, I have been lurking.

It’s so great to see so much success for your students. The acceptances on this thread are always so exciting and well deserved.

We have some visits planned for next week while my S2 is on spring break, and are now working w/ a tutor for the ACT (since his first two attempts didn’t go as well as we hoped, despite very good scores on practice tests…so frustrating).

How is the process going for you chocchipcookie? For me it is a completely different experience than w/ S1 who was/is such a different type of students. Much harder this time around.

^^UMich:

I agree…much harder this time around. Completely different circumstances. We have only 6 viable options that we’ll be applying to. I remember having a list of like 18 or so and slowly but surely we’ve eliminated many that just didn’t fit for one reason or another. He would be very happy at most of the 6, with 1 being a real safety and the other 5 being good matches. Also, his favorite seems to be WPI, so here’s hoping he’ll be accepted! They do have early action, so we’ll definitely apply early. How about you guys?

Umich, I’ll be happy to answer any other questions you have about McDaniel. It’s been a great fit for my nephew, who is benefiting from the extra academic support available. He does stay on campus most weekends, but there’s not a whole lot going on, and there’s not much in the area for students to do. Good luck with the college visits and ACT prep.

Choc: I think a list of 6 schools is fine as long as you have good fits with a safety and matches. There’s a poster on the college class of 2015 thread whose D goes to WPI and seems very happy.
