Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

Congratulations on all of the acceptances!

Good luck on making the final choice. I remember 4 years ago when S1 made me wait until April 27th (!!!) before he made his choice and I could send out the deposit check.

And good luck to those of you with hs juniors who are embarking on the search/selection process! Enjoy those college visits - feel free to share your observations and questions. Out of the entire process - I do miss visiting colleges. Don’t think my sons would agree with me though.

Will do, pdk. There is another accepted students day at Goucher, if that works better for you. We actually didn’t go to our “local” reception since travel to Manhattan is not very easy for us and it was midweek evening. Felt bad about not taking him. Don’t know how you manage with twins. You will have 2 move in days, 2 parents days, etc. You have my admiration!

Congrats tootiredtocare on the decision!

Congrats tootired on the decision, that’s a weight off, isn’t it? Wish we were there yet!

Thanks, Shulamit. We will try to make the other accepted students day. Would be nice if DS would forward the emails to me, I’m going to have to look this all up on the various school websites and see if we can plan a trip. I am taking DD to see Macalester this week, and want to take her to Reed (maybe take DS to Puget Sound on same trip), and also get her to Wellesley admitted students days, along with getting DS to Wheaton and Ursinus again. Oh dear. It really is not easy, but looking forward to when the decisions are made, we can send in the deposits, and start obsessing about dorms, deciding what they need to bring to school, and organizing all of that!

We went through a checklist last night with DS’ top three schools: Lehigh, Miami, Tulane.

As expected, it was no contest.

DS is a CANE. Deposit paid this morning :)

Mazal tov, LINY!!!

Congrats to LINY and Tootired Sons on their decisions!!

PDK: Good luck with the revisits. It looks like you’ll have a busy month.

Go Canes!!! Mazel Tov! The search is over! Lynmom, as I am walking in the park walking and writing this post (and almost breaking my neck after I tripped on a log), I am coming to the realization that we will eventually meet and that makes me smile (ok, maybe I should stop not smiling now because a couple of men are smiling back). Who knows you a have a son I have the most gorgeous nieces, one in UM one going in Spring ( daughter in a relationship with a kid from bbyo from Texas that she met a year in the Internet, go figure). I am a Jewish mother after all, always looking.

Mazel Tov to Linymom and Linyson! :)

As Liny knows I’ve been to UMiami several times…my nephew is currently a junior there and LOVES, loves, loves it! What’s not to like with palm trees swaying in the sun?? (I wanna go back to college!)

Congrats on the final decision, altho many of us here already knew where he was headed in the Fall!

Tootired: Congrats on Illinois, Pkd: Good luck with the twins…Vitrac: congrats on Tulane…Jozuko too? Can’t keep track anymore!!!

Ddahwan: All of us Jewish mothers have been trying to do matchmaking for years now! Let them all be well and enjoy their experiences.

MDmomfromli and C43: We all have juniors? Oy, here we go again! ;)

The U is a better place today. Congrats on your choice. I just got back from a cruise out of FL. Sat among the palm trees, thinking a guy could get used to this. Hope he can handle the year-round spring fever. Nice problem to deal with.

Chocchipcookie I know how it feels. I have a junior too. After my relaxing walk she called to ask me what AP classes I thought she should take senior year…end of relaxation.

Thank you everyone! I’m excited to buy orange and green! (When did I ever say THAT in my life!)

Mazel Tov Liny! I knew that the U was in your future! (Although Vitrac and I were secretly hoping that you would join us at Tulane…I guess that we will have a cocktail in your honor at move-in: we already have dinner plans with Aquamom!). I know that you will all be happy…now you can buy the sweatshirts!

Hi everyone and congrats on all the incredible acceptances. I read them, smile and hope that next year at this time I will be able to share some great news!

PKdof13: I live in the next town over from Bryn Mawr so if you need any local info or if your daughter ends up there and needs a family nearby, I’m here…

We went to Colorado for spring break and did the tour of UC Boulder which my son LOVED, not much not to love for a 17 year old skier. We wanted to see Colorado college but they were on spring break too, and in such a small school we were told it would be like visiting a ghost town. Still thinking about taking my son to Elon this weekend, but life is a bit hectic right now (we just started a remodel project of our master bedroom and bath, living in the play room, my 97 year old grandmother fell and had hip surgery so I’m spending a lot of time with her and as a family photographer - spring is a busy time work wise).

Right now if anyone cares… my list is as follows
UC Boulder - should get in, not sure about how big and the party rep. it has
Colorado College- where my gut say’s he should be, but tough to get in (he feels it too)
Elon- good fit, he doesn’t understand NC and where he would ski or or wakeboard?
University of Vermont- kind of feel if we are doing that, I should let the kid be in Colorado
Quinnipiac- don’t know much, but interesting choice and should easily get in
U.Conn- on our list to visit, not sure about it
U Mass- people seem unhappy here, so might cross this off the list
Clark U. I like a lot of things about this school but the surrounding area is dangerous?
Eckerd: thought florida would be great, safety school?
University of Miami: he would love it, it’s a reach but he want’s to go for it.
Syracuse: he thinks it will be just like his high school, but I think we should look at it
Brandeis: reach school, I think
Tulane: reach possibly not? he’s intrigued by it

His stats: 4.2 this year but 3.4 before this year has taken lots of honors a few AP and some IB (he just discovered that studying actually works) Just took his first SAT’s in March and got 630 reading, 640 math and 640 writing (I’m assuming they will go up, but I was pleased with those scores for a first time). He has his own film business and works for the top cinematographer in Philly for a year now. He’s artistic and business minded, quirky and interviews and writes very well so thinking he will do better with a school that gives interviews and essay’s a lot of weight (like Colorado College)…

any words of wisdom for this overbearing, control freak Mom who is driving my son up a wall. Oh, I put SAT words all over the house in areas he frequents like the fridge, next to the toilet seat, in his bathroom mirror, where he keeps his car keys… he’s really ready to turn me in for a sane mom.

Like that TV show “Wife Swap”…they might want their own moms back after “Jewish Mom Swap”
Elon is located in the middle of NC with mountains about 3-4 hours drive one way and beaches the other. It would not be as convenient as living right near skiing, but there is access to outdoor activities. He can visit to see how he likes it
[Elon Outdoors](<a href=“Elon University - America’s Top-Ranked Teaching University”>Elon University - America’s Top-Ranked Teaching University)

Thanks Pennylane, I added the info there to my spreadsheet for him… I like the school a lot, personally.

Jewish mon swap! I love it! Yes my son would appreciate me if the new mom posted SAT words all over the house! I would look low-key after that!

However, if I would have thought of posting SAT words all over the place, I’m sure I would have done it!

Thanks, moments, for offering to be her local family! Off to Mac tomorrow, we’ll see how she likes it. Also registered for Wellesley open campus event. Probably going to take her to Reed. Going to have her check out JHU again when DS visits Goucher.

I love the idea of the Jewish mom swap! If anyone ends up at Chicago school we are about 20 minutes north of the city & are happy to have holiday guests!

LINY: Congrats on Miami! Now that I know which Miami you are referring to I can be very jealous of the weather. Not sure that orange & green is much worse than orange & blue (UIUC) but I’m sure the kids will wear them well.

Momentscaught: Niece & 2 nephews went to Boulder & LOVED every minute of it. Good education; niece worked for a year & is now going to grad school, nephew 1 graduated in December & is working in Boulder, nephew 2 is staying on for one more year (he graduates in May) to get CPA. All had a lot of fun, a lot of skiing & outdoor adventure but also were happy with the education, friends and job prospects. Every school is a party school if you want it to be & I think you can find the right balance at any school, too. My brother was concerned about the legalization issue but then figured that it just made everything a little safer when you stop to think about it.

Other niece is sophomore at Tulane and LOVES it. Physics major & having the time of her life (partying a little more than her mom would like but still maintaining GPA to keep scholarship). In other words, you can’t go wrong!

On a personal note: slight bit of buyer’s remorse yesterday. S received a packet of cards in the mail from Case Western which reminded us all about the reasons he applied there in the first place. Pangs of the nurturing nature of their program vs. big state flagship woke me up in the middle of the night. Got to let it go, I think…

My kids would be the first to sign up for Jewish mom swap…

Hey ccc: my D2 is a sophomore. I’m just in overdrive…thus, the Jewish mom swap.
