Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

NYMom3Kids-I have a junior who is also crunched for time. No more weekends till the beginning of August (she is at sleepaway camp all summer) and starts school as soon as she gets home. We are busy trying to figure out where to squeeze in visitation before senior year is in full swing. We recently paid a small fee for an advising service. I was afraid it was a waste but after a 2 hour meeting I am feeling more confident about our decision. I did get some info i can pass along.
1st-do an interest inventory (if your school has access to one I would use it). Then start looking for careers in that range. Next schools that have degrees to get her to that career.
2nd-consider the social aspect of the school. Likes and dislikes/things important to your child. This site has a great filtration system (at least what I have found so far).
3rd-cost!!!
4th-take all the colleges that come up in the search and cross reference them with Hillel’s college site.
We are a family of average financial status. My daughter has a 3.85 weighted with honors and AP. She is not a uber student. But very hardworking. She is also not competitive or a party kid. But wants a strong social environment. Emory, Vanderbilt, Tulane, Brandeis, Duke are all great thoughts (academics and jewish) but I don’t think financially or the pressure of those schools is right for my kid. Most people post them as B schools. I actually consider them A schools. I am on the next tier of schools and having a harder time in our search. She also wants mid size (2-15k). It is not easy.
Some schools we may look into are Eckerd, Quinnapac, College of Charleston. We are still waiting for SAT scores to post.
If you want to pick my brain please reply.

A college advisor asked my daughter on a scale from 1-10 (1 being liberal/10 being conservative) what type of learning environment she will most likely thrive. Then he said she should ask the schools (whether it’s admissions or student tour guides or other students) how they would rate their professors. Great questions because you want a school that is compatible with your learning philosophy.

Re Chardo’s question, in the case of our S, he wants to be a Rabbi. He would have to get a graduate rabbinical degree if he still wants to do it, of course. However, plans do change and its a huge commitment. As said above, working in Jewish education or non-profit would be another good path.

Thanks for the suggestions above, I am keeping notes and will consider schools that otherwise were not on my radar, like Emory.

Momofgrits you are right. Most of the school listed are A schools (maybe Tulane a little less selective than them even though still a B+ , A average). Fit is very important, and only you and him/her can really know if a place is the right place or not. That is one of the reasons I think in my son’s case UMiami fit the bill. He is a very bright student with high scores that likes being challenged academically but at the same time does not like the cut- throat environment that exists at some very selective schools. Do not feel rushed. After applying and even after being accepted you still have a window of opportunity to check a school out.

MomofGrits: Depending on the answers to your four questions (above), you might consider University of Delaware. A friend of my DD was accepted to Brandeis but will be going to Delaware in the fall (got into the Honors Program at UD) and is already excited about UD Hillel. It’s about 15K students, but the campus does not seem so big at all. Plus, I hear that the Honors Program makes it feel smaller (my DD not in Honors).

DS would be happy to speak with anyone about Bama Hillel or UA in general.

Happy Mother’s Day everyone!

how are we on the bottom of page 3?

Bit of a pre-summer lull I guess.

I’m excited to be at Elon in a few days. Will finally get to see the new Hillel House and the ZBT fraternity house where S2 will be living next year.

Leaving Tomorrow for D1 college graduation. the time goes so quickly…But happy to have her moving back to So. Cal… D2 also back for the summer this weekend…
A full house…

Warmest congrats SoCal! Cliche but so true. Time has flown.

Congrats Socaldad! Enjoy the graduation and having both daughters home this summer.

Congrats socaldad. Glad you’ll have your girls back in So Cal.

My D1 graduates this Sunday, will be home for the summer and then moving on.

Hope all had a wonderful Mother’s Day.

Our S1 is also graduating this weekend - it did go quickly. Now if he could just get his job situation nailed down!

I just wanted to give a shout out to Jason Benkendorf, Hillel Director at American University, for a very nice and meaningful invocation at the Kogod Business School on Sunday.

One more graduating first born this weekend, we are leaving Friday for Sat Graduation. It will be one of few a far between times that all 4 of us will be together as plans look right now. Wish I could say kiddo was coming home but Socal he likes your neck of the woods too well. I agree it did go fast, good luck to your S on the job front RVM. Congrats to you also College for 3. It looks like there are several of us with older kids in HS class of 09.

Congrats to C43, RVM, BX3 and Spectrum! Enjoy the graduations. Best of luck to all the new grads.

Having no kids in school seems so weird…I am having trouble adjusting to the close of a very long life chapter!

Little kids, little problems…bigger kids…the worries don’t stop.

And the worries are bigger than ever…

and mommy can’t fix things any more.

Anyone else feeling this way?

Actually, things are not dire at all but I will be happier once each boy is happily settled.

S2 has had several good interviews and will know on Friday if he has the job he really, really wants.

S3 is getting some interviews, so that is good…but wants to go into sports marketing, where it is almost impossible to get a paying job right out of school.

My d is going on Birthrite June 26th…anyone else?

boysx3 - yes - yes! The worrying does not end - and it is harder when we are not in control.

So glad to be picking up S2 this weekend - he has had a fantastic freshman year at Elon.
