Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

[?Second-timers? get go-ahead for Birthright trip | Jewish Telegraphic Agency](http://www.jta.org/2014/01/23/news-opinion/israel-middle-east/committee-approves-birthright-expansion-to-second-timers?utm_source=Newsletter+subscribers&utm_campaign=f39711a76e-JTA_Daily_Briefing_1_24_2014&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_2dce5bc6f8-f39711a76e-25356297)

Interesting…I wonder how much the BR program has influenced this, or the economy. The high school programs in Israel are not inexpensive, even with some subsidy.
It is still great that the college kids can go because they will bond with the kids at their current school and hopefully be more active in campus Jewish life because of it. I see your point Slithey Tove, as your child has already experienced Israel in more depth than a BR trip, but the benefit may be to the group as a whole to have students like yours on the trip. They will be natural leaders and if they make connections with less active students, those students may participate more in the long run. Of course, your D may also have other interests since she’s already done this type of trip.

I wonder if the BR tour leaders would make a mix of first time students and not first time.

It surprises me that people who otherwise have the inclination and resources to send their kids to Israel for the summer might have chosen not to do so because they’d lose their eligibility for a future 10-day tour. But, who knows how people think. I spent 8 weeks in Israel with NFTY when I was 15. I guess it might have been fun to go back for a short visit with friends from Hillel in college, particularly for free, but I don’t know whether it would have fulfilled the purpose/mission of Birthright to send me.

I have a little dismay about NFTY Israel programs…they have emphasized the high school programs and really dropped the ball on gap year, for no reason I can fathom. They piggy-back on Netzer Olami’s program but don’t really support it, and certainly don’t encourage kids to do it. It seems like a gap year has the potential to be even more formative than a 10-day tour, but what do I know?

I’m sure my DD will try to go back through NFTY. She hasn’t connected “officially” with Jewish life on campus - although she is a Jewish studies major and has a second internship at a Jewish organization this spring. But perhaps she will sign up through her campus. She is traveling in the UK right now and won’t be home for another 9 days (visiting the international staff from her summers working at a URJ camp). I’m sure she will update me on any emails she got about another Israel trip and what she wants to do.

I will definitely encourage my DS to sign up at his campus with his good friend who is Jewish.

Thanks everyone for congratulations. I didn’t mean to be so cryptic. D is going to Muhlenberg next fall!

totiredtocare,
this is the list I was talking about

Fabulous news! Congratulations.

congrats mozika! great school

p.s. I do NOT like the new format.

As a former student and passionate advocate of UI design (as well as
a former college course developer & instructor of same), my thoughts:

Far too much white space … both vertically and horizontally. Undue
amount of scrolling needed; everything’s spread out & harder to read.
One can only see handful of posts (or fewer) per screen. An unwarranted
decrease in screen information density (and this is after tweaking
the browser settings to reduce font size somewhat).

The list of threads uses a light blue font that has insufficient contrast
with the white background – much harder to read. (Indeed, I recall studies
showing that it’s about the worst color that one could choose.)

All of this white is giving me a headache.

The paragraph lines are too long. Easier to take in shorter lines
(which is why I use hard line returns in my posts).

Where once one could have a single useful email with synopses of
the day’s thread responses, there’s now a single email message
for each post, with no content. Useless. I’ve already unsubscribed.

The control panel & thread tools are hidden somewhere. Maybe.
I have yet to figure it all out. Don’t know that I’ll bother.

Username drop-down menu for sending a PM, email, or looking up
posts – GONE. (Really?)

And the Contact link at the bottom of the page – doesn’t work
(or didn’t when I tried last night).

I’d describe the change as a user experience failure. Worse than
Windows 7 to Win8 or Office 2003 to 2007. By every measure
that I can think of, the site is a worse vehicle for efficient and
effective communication and transmission of information. The only
plus I’ve noted is that one now has an hour to edit one’s post.
Inadequate consolation … .

Many thanks to you all for your helpful insights. I’ll miss you.

[/rant, exhaling … ]

I wish the user names were much more prominent, old tired eyes, maybe, but just my thought!!!

I’m just posting a reply so I can hopefully fast forward to the end of this thread. The new website thinks this is a new thread for me, and I can’t figure put how to skip past the thousands of posts I’ve already read.

Well that worked. Absurd.

Hate the new changes. Why did they have to fix what wasn’t broken?

Very thorough article on Kosher food options at colleges:

http://www.tabletmag.com/jewish-life-and-religion/160129/kosher-on-campus

I realized after doing last post that there is no longer a place to put a headline, which was useful in a long running thread such as ours which frequently has multiple conversations taking place simultaneously. I suggest trying to make a heading at the top of your posts if you are posting on a specific college or topic.

I am new to all of this. My D is considering Towson. We come from a predominantly Jewish suburb of Long Island and she is concerned that there might not be enough Jewish girls like her at Towson. can anyone shed some light on this for me? I heard it is about 11% Jewish.

INFO ON TOWSON
Just saw that there are no headlines so I am editing my previous post.

My D is considering Towson. We come from a predominantly Jewish suburb of Long Island and she is concerned that there might not be enough Jewish girls like her at Towson. can anyone shed some light on this for me? I heard it is about 11% Jewish.

Hi pviewmom,
My son goes to Goucher, which is in Towson (the city) and I have noticed that his Hillel sometimes does joint activities with the Towson Hillel. Goucher is very Jewish, has a very active Hillel, so Towson’s Hillel must be somewhat active if they are programming together.

Is it just me…or is this new format harder on the eyes?

expatCanuck has some excellent analysis of why the new CC is just a bit “difficult.” Reminds me of the MS releases that while they may fix something, leave screen navagation with much to be desired…

@Shulamit - Not just you. In a nutshell, it’s a poorer interface both visually and functionally.
Some earlier rants:
