Colleges That Have Changed Names

Also known as MUST. :)

What was formerly Boston Tech changed its name when it moved from its former campus in the Back Bay area of Boston to its current location. We now know it as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

A school that was first called Throop University, then Throop Polytechnic Institute, and then Throop College of Technology (after its founder, Amos Throop) changed its name for the last time in 1921. We now know it as the California Institute of Technology.

A school that was dubbed simply “The New College” changed its name 3 years later to honor a man who donated a book collection that formed the basis of the school’s budding library system. The school decided to rename itself to honor that donor. We now know that school as Harvard University.

A school that was founded as “The Collegiate School” and operated under that name for 17 years received a series of gifts from a rich benefactor and decided to rename itself in honor of that benefactor. We now know that school as Yale University.

{So, yes, in case anybody is wondering, John Harvard and Elihu Yale did not actually found Harvard and Yale. The schools had already been founded years before they entered the picture.}

I just remembered watching a video called “Accepted” about students going to South Harmon Institute of Technology. The movie was great, as were the initials of the college. The school’s name was never changed.
