Colleges with best/worst names

I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this but…

the absolute worst…

GRAMBLING STATE UNIVERSITY

The one thing Reed has going for it is that it rhymes with one of the things Reed is most well known for… lol

best:
princeton (so regal)
kalamazoo (thats so much fun to say - it just makes me smile, it sounds so goofy. but i guess that might be a bad thing >.>)
cambridge (ahh sounds so cool!)
julliard
williams (i dunno. it sounds cool)

worst:
kenyon (because it sounds like kenya, and it’s no where near kenya!)
claremont mckenna (it sounds so drab to me)
oxford (the shoes?!)
mcgill (like…gills as in fish?)
wellesley (never figured out how to pronounce it)
macalester (too many syllables)
sewanee (hehe)
wofford (hehe. remainds me of waffles for some strange reason)
college of wooster (haha. rooster)
pomona (if you rearrange the letters, you get pooman)

How many syllables in ‘Kalamazoo’

My daughter won’t even look at Lipscomb, which seems to be a good fit for her, because of the name! She thinks it sounds like “Lip-skum”.

I still believe that Oglethorpe will always be the worst.
There’s even more than ONE Oglethorpe.
Seriously, everytime I type out Oglethorpe, I laugh a little in my head.

HAVERFORD – best name
go black squirrels?

I guess my fave would have to be Hendrix College, just because I’m a child of the sixties and it’s groovy to think maybe Jimi left all his money to establish a nice little college.

But there are so many other interesting names. I especially like the religious ones.

For example Messiah College certainly sounds like the answer to my prayers.
Bryn Athyn College of the New Church, on the other hand, sounds pretty scary. Is that where Jim Jones learned how to mix the Kool Aid?

How about New Saint Andrews College? What was the matter with the old one?
As for Pontifical College Josephinium, is that really a school, or some kind of plant named after the Pope’s alma mater?

I’m guessing St. Olaf College was named after a Viking who grew tired of looting, raping, pillaging and burning, then found redemption.

That’s it for the religious ones. Most of the ones I hate just don’t happen to sound very nice.

Denison University sounds like a murky, dark place. So does Harvey Mudd and Swarthmore. Drury sounds perfectly dreary. Dordt College must be a school for real … dordts!

Mount Marty College just sounds stoopid. I mean, if somebody’s great enough to get a mountain named after him, why not refer to him by his formal Christian name? Is there a Mount Chucky College somewhere, or a Hill Billy University?

Finally, there’s Biola University, which sounds like it’s named after a vile-tasting fiber laxative.

Best:
Berkeley (just like the name a lot- sounds like Broccoli)
Carnegie Mellon
Stanford, Princeton, Harvard

Worst:
Fart-mouth
Tufts- it somehow sounds like a dog’s name!

I’ve never heard of this school; where is it located?

right next to Fale.

Haven’t read all 59 pages of this thread (who would’ve thought?), but I always thought Ursinus was a funny name.
It always brings to mind a river in CT, I think, called the Mianus. Wonder why there’s no college named after that??

I thought it was closer to Frown. :(

Best- Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Duke, Emory, Tulane, Hamilton, Vanderbilt
Worst- Tufts, Skidmore, Colgate (saying you go to Colgate University just sounds silly, and it shouldn’t because it’s a great school), Harvard (sound pretentious for some reason)

Mousegray- srsly? Haha I just loled.

LOL! How is it their fault that their name is so famous? What should they do about it? Change their name to…UMass at Cambridge?

^^ I just don’t especially care for the name itself, especially the way some people pronounce it (Hahhvad)

Yes, molliegym, seriously. But it’s not pronounced THAT way. It’s a short ‘a’. Unless you’re immature like me and can’t resist.

Best and Worst name: Digipen Institute of Technology
/thread

what about Russell Sage??? now that’s a bad name. why would you name an all-girls’ college after a man? haha.
