Colleges with best/worst names

There was once a proposal at Stanford to have the mascot be Robber Barons, which would also be a fitting mascot for Carnegie Mellon (two in one college name), Drew, Duke, and Vanderbilt.

[On Campus - Stanford University’s Official Athletic Site](http://www.gostanford.com/school-bio/stan-nickname-mascot.html)

I grew up in New Jersey, and RUTGERS either sounds really masculine, (think Rutger Hauer the movie star) or really, really dumb. Like, there is no University of New Jersey, our University system is called Rutgers ? - - makes it easy for people to think New Jerseyians are dumb.
Also, our Honors college is…get this…The College of New Jersey…always called TCNJ by the natives.

ucb – I’ll add to your list of ambiguous abbreviations ASU, which in this part of the country is Appalachian State University. By the way, that’s Western (not West) Carolina.

Too many ambiguous abbreviations to list…but here are a few:
MSU
U of M
NU

UNO? With a polar bear - must be Northern Ontario.

^^^Or a Chicago pizza place.

I’m sure someone’s mentioned it, but Bob Jones University. Not the most inspiring of names.

Oral Roberts University is also pretty bad. I can just imagine a student who likes the school saying “Yea I love Oral!”

^^^ They shall be known as the 69-ers!

Worst: Rutgers, Beloit, Colgate, Pitzer

Best: DARTMOUTH, Princeton, Penn, Kenyon, Swarthmore (these names are so slick)

Kalamazoo has got to make the worst list xD.

Best: Dartmouth, Canterbury, Cambridge

Sent from my XT897 using CC

Worst: kalamazoo, keyuka, Colgate, purdue, skidmore, waterloo

Best: Princeton, Yale, Stanford
Worst: Bowdoin, Tufts, Swarthmore, Duke

Best: Stanford, Georgetown, Dartmouth, Vassar, Princeton, Auburn, Duke, Emory, Pomona

Worst: Ball State, Cornell College, Case Western Reserve, University of Pennsylvania, Ursinus, Samford University, OK State (Oklahoma), Brown

Remember that Stanford’s legal name is the “Leland Stanford Junior University.” Cal fans like to imply that it’s a glorified junior college.

Best: Slippery Rock University
Worst: Kennesaw state university

Worst: Johns Hopkins, Ball State, Brown, Bowdoin, Duquesne, Barnard, Tufts, Rutgers, Purdue, DePaul, gosh I could go on for a while…heehee :3

This is tough but some definitely stick out:

Dartmouth - sounds so badass
Yale - Nice, clean, simple
Princeton - sounds high class, prestigous
Harvard - Need I say more
Stanford - very much like Harvard
Berkeley(and when it’s referred to as Cal) Sounds way better without the ‘UC’
MIT - Short, intimidating, clean
Duke - sounds prestigous, reminds me of the renaissance
Notre Dame - same as above
UCLA - Just like MIT, short, easy to say,
UC Davis - Sounds serious, Davis goes very well with ‘UC’
George Mason
UVA

Worst:
Brown
Tufts
Washington University at St Louis

Eh, if Notre Dame were pronounced Notr

Some of the ones in the NOVA and DC area are like the History Channel:
You got your George Washington U, which costs more than a few George’s;
Not to be confused with George Mason U;
And, of course, James Madison U;
And who can forget Mary Washington U and William and Mary.
