Yeah, I didn’t mean to open up @Sue22 to snide remarks. I can definitely understand how the end of these tiring college tours are, having endured the same 5 years ago (my God where did the time go!). Once you have found schools you know you like and, as Sue pointed out, have something you want that you already know this last school doesn’t, blowing off that last school can be a surprisingly easy decision. I am just endlessly curious, which is why I asked. But I sure know a lot more about Muhlenburg than I did before asking! Although I will never be able to spell it correctly without looking first.

“In my opinion, it’s the wind off the water which makes U of C so awful in the winter. I’ve lived in upstate NY (the real upstate part) when I was in high school and have been back here for the last 20 years. I don’t think it’s nearly as bad here - but I also don’t have to walk in bad weather like I had to as a student.”

U of C isn’t really on the lakefront, though. Northwestern (and Loyola) are, but U of C isn’t.

Sally, growing up in Minocqua… I remember leaving basketball practice at night wearing just shorts and jersey because it was a balmy 25 degrees. LOL

Spending a decade in Nashville and another two years in Denver has weakened me considerably.

Now back in the vicinity (Iowa…), I say, “Bring it on!” Haha.

I’m sure I’ll be the wimp sprinting out to and back in from his car…

“U of C isn’t really on the lakefront, though. Northwestern (and Loyola) are, but U of C isn’t.”

I lived on Hyde Park Blvd. It was like a block in from the lakefront. To get to the building my classes were in I had to walk across and down the Midway (nothing blocking that from the lake front) to the side the Museum of Science & Industry is on.

https://maps.uchicago.edu/

LOL! Well, if you want to consider that lakefront, I suppose that’s your prerogative, but NU and Loyola are “lakefront” in the sense that well, you exit your dorm, walk 50 yards and you’re at the actual lake. The buildings front the lake. It’s just amusing to think that something as far inward as U of Chicago is “on the lake.” By that definition, Skokie is on the lake too.

Oh, come on @Pizzagirl. UC is certainly on the lakefront as compared to Wheaton! But more seriously, looking at Google Maps it appears that the nearest part of the actual UC campus to the lake is about 7 blocks. Personally I don’t call that lakefront, since I always thought beachfront property required direct access to the beach with no structures intervening. Even the one building that is out there all by its lonesome is 3 blocks away.

You walk out of the student centers at NU and Loyola and you are on the lakefront. As in – hold onto your hat, if it’s a windy day, it might blow into the lake. I don’t know if Loyola has a beach or not, but NU has two beaches. Seriously, this is pretty amusing to anyone who knows these campuses to think that U of Chicago is a lakefront campus. Do they even have any facilities on South Lake Shore Drive?

Recently visited UF. Kids were underwhelmed and I was disappointed. The campus was very spread out and didn’t “make sense”. The info session was mostly about what the university was looking for in the applicants and not enough about what the applicants might be looking for in the university (other than rank and “hey, we’re the Gators”). We were not taken inside any buildings (except the stadium at the end), and after 90 minutes of walking around the campus in 90 degree weather, we weren’t really interested in retracing our steps to explore further.

Real lakefront campus

The wind still comes off the lake and it’s effing cold walking in it. I didn’t say it wasn’t cold and windy at NU or Loyola. just that it is when walking around UofC.

I never said it was a lakefront campus. I said. “In my opinion, it’s the wind off the water which makes U of C so awful in the winter.”

One would never say, Syracuse doesn’t get lake effect snow because it’s not on Lake Ontario!!

“Cooler by the lake.” ;)

The UChicago community, which extends beyond classroom buildings, feels connected to the Point, 57th Street beach, the lakefront bike trails, and other parks west of Lake Shore Drive.

Visited UofC just last November…loved, loved, loved it…but must say I have strong memories of tundra-like winds at certain points of the tour…even so, really liked it!

I’m sorry, but it’s hard for me to read this as anything other than not-so-thinly-veiled code language for “white people.”

I don’t think that’s the case at all. Some of the best-dressed (IMHO) kids at my son’s school were African-American, and many of them–especially the athletes–had “preppy” tastes.

As great a school as Muhlenberg is, I don’t believe it’s exceptional in terms of its racial diversity. Most private LACs aren’t, but it’s not usually for lack of trying.

I think what the poster was referring to was a more athletic/preppy culture as opposed to “hipster.” Not that there isn’t a lot of overlap!

Wow, because Black and Hispanic kids aren’t allowed to be preppy?

For the record, Muhlenberg was among the least racially diverse schools on her list, and it has a smaller percentage of minority students than her current school.

@LucieTheLakie So you’re saying that pastel shorts from Vineyard Vines constitutes “best dressed?”

It seems to me that the Muhlenberg/ boarding school, artsy/preppy discussion is taking this thread way off track. Can we shelve it for now?

My dh and I were reading The Neurotic Parent’s Guide to Admission (I’m the neurotic one ).
We laughed so hard over the reasons kids ruled out various schools, because we’ve heard most of them. We’re headed off to Northwestern this week, so I’m dreading the ugly library comments. :)

If you feel yourself sinking, head for the nearest exit. Run, don’t walk. ;-)

"For the record, Muhlenberg was among the least racially diverse schools on her list, and it has a smaller percentage of minority students than her current school. "

And with that snarky comment Sue22 would like to end the Muhlenberg discussion. Wow. We all get it Sue, you and your daughter didn’t like it. Fine. It’s not for everyone, clearly. I hope your daughter continues to be happy at her more diverse school. You win!
