Colleyville TX valedictorian preparing for HARVARD (news item)

O give me a break. I come from the same exact situation as these kids, I AM AN INNER CITY KID. I though, even in all the poorness and problems managed to get into a top rated public magnet school. So why the hell should I not get any more of an advantage as these kids? God damn its so unfair. In my school they could care less if you bust ur @@@ to support your family. If they dont like your political views and your method of writing (which was top rated at Harvard this summer) they will bust you down.

Why would anyone publish such an article? A girl got into Harvard!..a girl from Texas got into college? MAJOR WOW!!! Champaigne and cake for all, this is a truly glorious day, and we should all be really really impressed. Where can I get her autograph?

Sort of a contradiction … if they have no ambition to get into Harvard, why would they bother applying? If anything, you should have said that all they care about is the Harvard name. But … apparently you yourself have some issues with that, if your ambition is for the “Harvardness.”

I do want to go to Harvard. Mopst kids that apply, however dont care for it. They just apply because they were fortunate to live in an environment that allowed them to earn good grades without any obstacle in their way and they think “why not.” They ahve no particular desire to go to the school, they are just presented with the opportunity and some of them get in. No care for the school, no particular desire to do everything possible to go there, just the right situation and the thought “why not.”

Sorry, people do not get into Harvard by the “why not” method, unless they are truly unbelievably gifted. Why would you go through the tough application, the essays, the interview, etc… if you don’t care about getting into Harvard? Stop trivialiazing other people’s desires and ambitions.

oh go do something productive. What do you know? Check out those people that Byerly keeps posting and you will see that this kids apply just because. I love Harvard, but individuals who get admitted are not gods. “unbelievably gifted” whatever dude. Go do some research, its a crapshoot.

Well this thread has gone far off track. So yeah, good for the girl who got in. What more needs to be said? Everything else is just kids taking off their college angst on someone who was fortunate enough to achieve a dream. Seems like a waste of time to me. ;)

I totally agree. People at Harvard aren’t any more special than the rest of us. I’m just a regular guy from Wyoming, and I have my ambitions. Hopefully the Wyoming Star-Post will soon sing my praises after I get into Harvard, or maybe even Princeton if I’m really lucky.

DHA, sorry to say, but life’s a ***** and then you die. GET OVER IT!
