Well done, @Marilyn !
Sign of the times, the prep instructions specifically advise to stop injectable medications for weight loss or diabetes one week before the procedure. And I overheard a nurse asking a patient when they did their last Ozempic injection.
It was utter misery fasting and doing a clear liquid diet 24 hrs before the “big day.” It took all the self control I had NOT to cuss out the whole clinic, because I was mad at the world. The procedure itself was over quick. They gave me Propofol and I woke up 20 minutes later. That was it.
No one said it was fun!! But I hope everything was good, @coolguy40, and you’re set for another ten years. And next time you’ll know what to expect.
The fasting and clear liquid diet is not fun. But I sure was happy by the time I got to the clinic, because I knew the misery was going to be over very soon. And a chocolate chip cookie would be on the menu right afterwards. I would never be rude to someone in a medical clinic, because first, it’s not their fault that I feel bad, and second, my life is in their hands so I certainly don’t want to anger them.
My only annoyance, kept to myself, was that the doctor was running over 45 minutes late at 8:00 am. And only scheduled appointments, no emergencies. I was hungry for the maple glazed doughnut that I knew husband had waiting for me. Likely someone else’s procedure was not as smooth as mine.
Incidentally, re the doughnut, the RN said although the fat content wasn’t ideal for my initial food, it was better than the pizza she knew some patients ate.
Hmmm, my providers had no curiousity about what we’d eat after our colonoscopies. We tended to eat a nice Japanese meal, which was very welcome after that fasting. We never had any issues.
The staff was nice and I got a juicebox afterwards. Yay!
When I had a colonoscopy in April I was still feeling very tired afterwards and only wanted to drink water and go to sleep. I didn’t have anything to eat until later in the afternoon when I woke up from a 3 hour nap.
I took two naps in the course of the day. Along with the lingering sedation effects, I had only gotten three hours of sleep if that.
I just WISH I could have scheduled a last-minute colonoscopy yesterday. Caught a wicked bout of gastrointestinal nastiness, which meant I was well-cleaned out and could have been scoped. It does not make me look forward to the prep when I schedule my next, overdue colonoscopy.
It’s too bad they don’t allow walk- ins….
I just filled out the information on the forms they requested for my colonoscopy. At the end, I wrote a note and requested that I get their most experienced person for the insertion of the IV needle. I wasn’t happy last time when they tried several times before getting the “expert.” And I understand it could be hard for ANYBODY, but last time the expert succeeded the first time. I also wrote that I understand I need to hydrate like crazy. Ugh, I hope they listen to me. It will hard to bite my tongue if they fail three times and say, “I’m sorry!”
I’m so lucky to have decent veins. They almost never miss on me. Procedures are challenging enough without having to go through multiple sticks!
Yeah, my dad is in the hospital and he has the same veins I do - it runs in my family. They have had to stick him so many times!! They brought in their most experienced person who had luck, but then he had to go home for the day and later they said they needed two more draws! Dad told t hem to wait until the next day. I dread getting old. ![]()
Starting prep at 1 pm today. We’re supposed to go to a musical tonight. I didn’t think of that when I scheduled the procedure. I guess I’ll see how I’m doing.
Best wishes, @MaineLonghorn !!
May the IV angels guide your provider.
Elderly friend passed away from late stage colon cancer.
Never had a colonoscopy. Too afraid or busy to schedule.
Oh, that makes me so sad. I’ve lost count of how many I’ve had in the last 11 years, since they found a big polyp right when I turned 50. I’m getting tired of it, but I will get as many procedures as they tell me I should!
I finally had my first coloscopy yesterday (several years overdue). I opted for the Sutab prep (24 pills and a bunch of water) plus Zofran with both rounds of prep, because I knew I would be very likely to have more trouble and be pretty nauseous with the liquid prep. Now that it’s done, it definitely seems like it was the better prep option for me. Procedure was pretty easy and no polyps! Glad it’s over!
We schedule morning colonoscopies and usually go out for breakfast (or brunch) afterward.
