Columbia University Science Honors Program ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

OHHH MY GOSSSSSSH. The nerves are stressed.

5 more days…anyone know how we’re getting notified? And if we dont make it, will we be notified as well?

You will be notified by mail whether or not you get in.

I am so anxious about decisions this year. I am a sophomore; this is my 2nd time applying. This year, I would estimate that my scores were:

Math: 49/50 (1 wrong)
Science: 55/75 (15 blank, 5 wrong)
Challenge: 14/15 (0 wrong, 1 blank)

My transcript and application should not have been a problem, and my teacher was very enthusiastic about writing my essay. I fear that the science section killed me, because I didn’t know many of the biology questions. I took the test the first round, and the room was packed. Does anyone think I stand a decent chance of getting in this year?

Who got in?

They didn’t come out as far as i know. Columbia probably mailed them out today.

The Science Honors Program Admissions Committee is completing its review of the applications of all students who took the SHP entrance examination this spring. There were more than 2,000 applicants, with 400 to be accepted into the program. Decision results will be available online starting Tuesday, June 25, 2013. To view a decision on or after that date, a student should log into his/her SHP application (with pin number and password). After login, the student should click on “Your application decision is now available online” near the bottom of the first page displayed. The decision letter will then appear in a pop-up window.

Best wishes,
Science Honors Program

so nervous to find out /:
i really really like science esp. med so asdfghjkl; and columbia is like one of my dream schools

math is generally easy i’m taking trig at school…but i never completed a full year of geometry…

i think i scored about 48/50 on easy math (1 omit)
65/75 on science (4 omits..but i never ever touched on any aspect of physics in my life so i think most of those i got wrong except the circuit ones)
13 or 14/15 on challenge (1 omit)

i’m a freshman if that changes anything.

grades are eh-3.7 or so, but i’m taking all honors classes, and that’s unweighted
recommendation was decent, essay was ok, rushed last minute kind of.

what are my chances? lol.

Teenagecrime, your chances look pretty good. By brother got in as a freshman, and he estimates that his scores were:

3.98 GPA
47/50 Math
68/75 Science
13/15 Challenge

I believe that the most important factor is the test. Your scores were very high, and freshman get in more easily than sophomores or juniors. As long as your essay showed your interest, you should be fine. I would think that you have about a 75% chance. Good luck, I hope you make it!

I totally flopped with the challenge math. I’m not super math oriented, but I’m still decently good at it, I suppose. It’s a SCIENCE AND MATH program, so I suppose my science inclination counts for ~something~??

And the results are online this year, right?

The results will be available online on June 25th. Less than 20% of applicants will be admitted. Good luck to everybody!

One more day.

First of all, I would like to state that YOU HAVE TO GET 13-15 OF THE CHALLENGE MATH QUESTIONS RIGHT to be in the safe zone. A few people I know left like half the science section blank and still got in with their perfect math scores, while a few friends who are strong in all areas of science did not make it in. If you did not do well on the challenge math section, I recommend looking into amc 10 and mid amc 12 problems (past exams are available on AoPS) in preparation for next year.

Secondly, if you did not make the program, NO WORRIES! My friends cousin is a MATH and Science guy, AND HE APPLIED 3 TIMES FOR SHP AND GOT REJECTED ALL 3 times. But guess where he got accepted into? Princeton AND Columbia, and he chose Princeton.

Third, this year has a disproportionate amount of qualified applicants applying. I attend Stuyvesant and the current class of Freshmen are unusually strong, which is unsettling, although there are more seats opened up than previous years(~300 people) In addition, 400 IS NOT THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE WHO GOT ACCEPTED! I REPEAT, 400 IS NOT THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE WHO GOT ACCEPTED. A junior at my school tells me that around 80 - 150 people are newcomers, and the rest are those currently in the program.

Finally, If you do make the program, congrats! But don’t expect too much other than some award-like thing to put on your college application. YOU CAN ONLY MISS 3 SESSIONS, EVEN IF YOU’RE SICK OR THERE IS A FAMILY EMERGENCY! MISSING 4 or more will mean you’re kicked out of the program. If you picked the wrong classes(>.<) You might as well bring your laptop and play video games all morning in class than listen to the lecturer talk about **** you completely don’t understand.

Nonetheless, GL all!

Oh and btw, apparently if you are a girl, you will get it much easier when it comes to acceptance into this program, or maybe girls just tend to have a higher GPA :stuck_out_tongue: (stupid gender inequalities >.<)

Thanks Liquiddragom, it makes me feel a little better because I probably got 14/15 challenge and 49/50 math, but I missed a lot of the science questions.

Does anyone know if results will be up at midnight?

@Tman1005
Idk, that’s what I’m waiting for right now too.
@Liquiddragom
You know people who already got in for next year? How?
Cause last year there were 20 challenge math instead of 15 from what I heard.

They’re not up yet waah

Still not up…

I thought this year we would be better informed of the result…

@liquiddragom The email sent on the 17th clearly states that 400 will be accepted. Are you sure that only 80-150 are?

These results have to come up soon. I’m freaking out!!
