Columbia University Science Honors Program ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

i qualified but barely lol

nice
i sillied the first question
mood

^ on AIME

@JumpyJLizard lol ive been thinking about taking it for a while but i havent yet

@chessmaster1077 How many do you need to get correct to qualify? And how was AIME?

@ADITYAEMPIRE you should, from what i’ve seen you’re smart and know a lot of good ways to solve problems quickly
besides, it’s not like taking it will hurt or anything
is it that your school doesn’t provide it or smth?

@JumpyJLizard Ya we do AMC 10 in 10th grade only.

uhh there’s a scoring system, cutoffs are based on that
you get 6 points for each correct answer, 1.5 for each left blank, and 0 for wrong answers
there are 25 questions, max score 150

cutoffs for past years can be found online at aops

@JumpyJLizard did u put the 7:24:48 question (sm like that)

oh okay
does that mean you do amc 8 in eighth grade? if so, how was it for you?

for amc 10 u need to be in top 5%
amc 12 top 2.5%
i second what @JumpyJLizard said about AOPS, they have a ton of questions from previous amc’s and the solutions (how to do them). they may be a bit confusing if you haven’t taken alg2/precalc (especially probability and factorials lol) but it’s still a good source.

@ADITYAEMPIRE oh no thank you

@JumpyJLizard Funny story, I signed up for it but we went on VK so i couldnt take it, but i saw the questions on AOPS

@ADITYAEMPIRE yeah @chessmaster1077 gives a good point in addition to the problems they give detailed solutions which is awesome
also they have really good books check them out

ya @chessmaster1077 I’ve been using the website for a couple years now, and I have their books and theyre pretty good

oh lol i was too late snaps fingers it’s good that you knew about it from before though

yeah in sixth grade i kinda dipped the AMC 8 because the signup flyers were very inconspicuous (or i was very blind) and i didn’t register in time

The difference of two numbers, sum, and product are in the ratio 1:7:24
What is the product of the two numbers?

^ can i copy and paste that into the compilation please?

@chessmaster1077

yeah sure answer was 48

x - y = z
x + y = 7z
xy = 24z

another triple system so much fun…

x = y + z
substitute into 2nd eq: 2y + z = 7z
y = 3z
xy = 8y
x = 8
8 = y + z

remember y = 3z

8 = 4z
z = 2
product must be 48 because 2 * 24 = 48

yeah my thinking patterns arent so organized…
