Columbia University Science Honors Program ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

hey i was in room 203 mathematics hall. i got 45-50 on math, 50 on science, 11 on challenge math but with one stupid mistake :frowning:
do you think i got in?

@ zapowneryi

how do u know that missed a few challenge questions? Did u redo the problems?

im pretty sure i got the rest right, but i realized i made a stupid mistake on one of them and yes i redid it.

How long did the test take? On the website it says it will end at 1:30 PM. Is that accurate?

Zapowneryi

Whats ur name. I think i might have met u.

I skipped 5 on easy math, but probably got the 45 I answered all right…out of 50…

I skipped 16 out of 75 for science because I never took physics and my stuff on earth science was a bit rusty, I probably got the majority of the other answered ones right…

I got 11/15 answers I think were right on challenge math.

Do you think I got in? I took it in Havemeyer Hall :)

would you say the challenge math was like amc 10 or amc 12?

I’m so nervous! I take physics & I’m really worried about the bio section. Any advice on studying that? & I’m practicing AMC 10 questions.. is that enough?
Also, I’m in Room 310 Fayerweather Hall! :D

I’m in room 717 Hamilton hall. Anyone else?

gawsh im starting to get worried! what is everyone doing to study for the test? For those who took it, would you say that its harder than the problems on the AMC 12? Ive been trying to do those (and failing lol)

@columbia97- I heard that some of the challenge questions were comparable to the last few ones on the AMC 10 and the AMC 12.

scratch that I heard that they were like the AMC 10. So practicing those should be enough.

@bxvgirl thanks!
what about the bio/ earth science portion? I’m a freshman and my school’s weird, so I’m taking physics now..?

@columbia97:
i would just look trough some regents bio r earth science books. I heard you need to know weather maps, so learning about those should be helpful. (Here is a link that I used: [K3JAE´s Weather Station - Weather Fronts Explained](http://www.k3jae.com/wxfrontsexplained.php))
I also skimmed over this for the Earth Sience portion (rocks and layers):[Fossils, Rocks, and Time: Rocks and Layers](Fossils, Rocks, and Time: Rocks and Layers)

For bio i heard that its nothing you can really study for, but if you can learn some general concepts it should help. Its supposedly more general knowledge.

For physics i heard you need to know circuits, but you will probably be fine on that :)

I also heard you need ot know the different bases (mainly the binary system, base 4, base 7). This website explained it pretty well: [Number Bases: Introduction / Binary Numbers](Intro to number bases & How to do binary numbers | Purplemath)

Btw, this is just what I’ve heard and what I’ve been doing. Don’t take my word for it though!! I’ve been reviewing with some of my friends who took it last year but didnt get in, so we’ve been trying to go over some of the main topics. Also freshmen get a bigger curve so its ok if you get a few more wrong. :)

I think I’ll be okay with the Science area. I’m not super worried about that. I haven’t taken Chem or Physics, but I heard that the Physics is mostly circuits and stuff from Earth Sci.
I’ll just review some Chem regents.
The easy math part I’m not really that worried about either. I’ve only got Algebra I and Geometry under my belt (I forgot bits and pieces of Algebra I… like the permutations and all that. I have to brush up on that).
I’m most worried about my lack of knowledge about Alg II. I’m going to study Trig over my spring break so I’ll be okay with that. I hope.

I tried to do some AMC10 and 12 questions and holy.
I could manage with some of the AMC10 questions but not as well as I thought I could.
And 12. I didn’t even bother reading through all the questions.
I consider myself a bio buff (I love the class! It’s the highlight of my day every day in school. nerdy), and decent at math (all accelerated classes and all the jazz that goes along with it).
I was a mathlete this year (I’m a freshie), and the mathlete questions were fairly easy for my area… Although not the Algebra II/Advanced Topics part of it.
I only have a teensy bit of Algebra II. It’s mostly from when I was bored and I did a few chapters from the text.

I know I have a pretty wicked essay and a wicked rec. letter, but asdfasdfasdf.
The test.
More specifically, the MATH on the test. orz
Anyone else in the same boat as me? Pretty good at math in school, but sucky at all the AMC stuff?

I took the test on March 31. I got a 102 on the AMC 10 and I can say that the challenge problems are more like the 1-15 problems on the AMC 10, I found them pretty easy.

For anyone that took the test already, did you guys actually find doing AMC tests useful for the challenge questions?

@rollingduck
I’m definitely in the same boat as you and I feel as though I’m sinking! I have the same dilemma as you. I’m all accelerated math at school but I took the AMC 10 (this past February was it?) and oh my God did I suck at it. I think that I’m just gonna do a million practice problems so that I know every situation they could possibly throw at us.

To everyone else:
My school is the same as columbia97 where everything is backwards and I’m a fresh taking physics. I noticed that SparkNotes has a HUGE study guide on everything science. Is their stuff accurate? I’ve been reading though those, trying to get the general ideas. Also, if there is physics on the test, is there stuff on circuits, light, sound, etc? My school hasn’t taught us that stuff yet.

There’s always something on circuit (i just watched the videos on khan academy for that) and stuff on acceleration. I’d just recommend finding a guide to like regents chemistry and biology and you’ll be fine.

so is the challenge math like amc 10 or amc 12 and what questions are they similar to?

also what science topic had the most questions??

Do we need to know Trigonometric Identities (Including Double-angle and Half-angle) for this test? We did not cover it in school yet. Can someone who took the test reply please?
