Sabaray, this is a great point. Although southwest of the city will give an easier commute, if it’s not a good area, don’t want to be there. Living in the New Orleans suburb of Metairie, we found that once we got past certain interstate exits, the commute quadrupled in time, so we don’t want to go too, too far out. We’re not going to be in the buying mode, so looking for an apartment. Not finding any apartment listings for town work will be in, so trying to find outlying areas with easy interstate access. Son went to undergrad in a college town, so we know how expensive, and unsafe, apartments close to campus can be, so want to avoid those areas as well. Thank you all so much for all your help. Keep it coming!
Not sure what you are considering southwest of the city - Grove City? I don’t know that people are pining to live there - I could be wrong. Hilliard seems to be decent. Dublin is very desirable but as Sabaray mentions VERY busy and can really become congested. Lower Upper Arlington is definitely upper middle class and very accessible. Is there a reason you don’t want to look closer to Columbus proper - so neighborhoods like Upper Arlington, Grandview, Bexley, etc.??? (Bexley is sort of close to the airport).
Really @Montegut you’re going to have to get there, explore the city a bit and figure out what amenities you want. Maybe you should plan a visit ahead of your move.
Columbus is an easy city to move around in. 71/315/33 north/south, 70/670 east/west and the 270 loop around the city. My wife and I would move there if one or both of our kids ends up there. Probably should have moved there 8 years ago to avoid the back and forth to Ohio State. Great town and suburbs.
The college town atmosphere is why I’m leaning away from the city, and the fact that cities, at least in Louisiana, tend to have blighted areas, crime, etc. We are not looking at upper middle class. I’m confused by Lower Upper Arlington. Is that one town or two? Really, accessibility to the interstate is going to be key. Grove City is where the hotel is for our initial stay, but looking at the apartments there online, I’m not feeling it as a place we’d want to live. Just picked it as a halfway point of Columbus proper and job location. On a hunch, I googled Target stores, and found two in Hilliard, so maybe that is going to be a place to start. I know this sounds silly to y’all, but as Southerners, being able to make a quick run to a Target is more important than how close the local art museum is when it’s cold outside. Love culture, don’t get me wrong, but that can wait for better weather. As for going there and visiting, we may not have the luxury of time there, but I guess if we have to stay in extended stay for a month or so, while we find longer term housing, that would be worth it. Thanks so much again, y’all!
