For Short Answer section, can you explain an activity using an essay mind set? Meaning, flowery and abstract illustrations? almost an anecdote? of course, i can’t go too much into it since it’s 150 words or less, but I’d rather not explain it like " this summer, i did blah blah blah, and i learned blah blah blah."

You can find out whether colleges have their own application or whether they accept the common app by looking at the websites of the colleges you’re going to apply to.

ticktock: Yes, you can. That’s what I did. I tried to explain a bit of my experiences with chess by using a story.

great, thanks!

Yeah, I read that book too. Honestly, at this point, I imagine nearly everyone is using the Common App if possible, so most adcoms are probably more familiar with it than their own app, lol, ironic i kno. On the one hand, they show more “desire” for the school, signaling a higher yield rate. On the other, they might irritate the adcom because they are used to common apps. I would say that the impact either positive or negative is therefore negligible. Thus, go for the common app.

i doubt adcoms would be like “who should we admit? this kid or that one? well this kid used our app so let’s admit him”

or

“this kid is very qualified and i wanna let him in but he used to common app so let’s reject him”

exactly…

I don’t think anyone’s claiming that. As I said when I asked the same question earlier, such a phenomenon would only exist on a subconscious level.

Here’s a reply to the “Common App v. Own App” thread, which has been merged into the general 2008-2009 Common Application Questions and Answers thread. It shouldn’t make any difference at all which application you use. All colleges that use the Common Application pledge to treat applications submitted with that form as well as they treat applications submitted on their own form.

This is a basic membership requirement for being part of the Common Application club. Don’t worry about this, and good luck in your applications.

P.S. Always use College Confidential’s search feature and look for sticky (“IMPORTANT”) threads for answers to frequently asked questions. Tell your friends that this year there will be a lot of questions and answers about the Common Application here on this thread for the 2008-2009 school year.

so i haven’t been able to find this anywhere, can you get a fee waiver for the common app. if you are a transfer? I asked them and they just gave me something about high school crap, that doesn’t help when I have been out of high school for over 3 years now

With The Common Application, Can You Tailor It For Each University?
Can You Make The Common Application Unique For Each University?
Wouldn’t That Be Better?

And Also, Is Applying Ed Better Than Applying Regular If You Are Already Sure You Want To Go To A Particular College?

I’m Sorry If This Question Is Stupid But I’m New To This. I Decided This Year To Study Abroad.
Thanks Loads!

To answer your first question, no! Not at all. Once you input information in your application, that info is saved and locked for good and will go to all colleges. The only way you could send other colleges different information is to do it by mailing. I actually was tryingt to send a different essay to Cornell since they asked for two but I couldn’t because everything was locked and I was too lazy to go through the mailing process.

According to your Ed question, yes you have a higher rate of acceptance if you do apply ED but you don’t have the luxury of comparing financial aid at different colleges. Once you’re admitted to your ED school, you are mandated to go there and theres no change of heart.

to visit the Help Desk (FAQ pages) on the Common Application site. In my opinion, the FAQ pages ought to be publicly viewable without logging in, so that we can all deep-link directly to answers to commonly asked questions, but the Common Application people are below industry standard in usability issues like that. Anyway, I think the question has been asked before and answered before for any of dozens of questions.

NO! I meant- can you tailor the essays- the personal statement and other essays according to each university?make an individualized essay for each university?

I just created an account, so I guess that it is up a day early. But I am unable to do anything other than select my colleges, and no supplements are online. Just a heads up…

Common App uniqueness: Some colleges give you a choice of common app or their own application. If you have a choice and feel the need to customize, choose the schools application. Otherwise it’s one size fits all on the common app.

ED: This question has been asked many times on CC. Consensus is, as HofL points out, if there is financial uncertainty, don’t apply ED.

The answer is yes, and at least one of the answers above is incorrect. For a while last school year, the Common Application “locked” your submission as soon as you sent it to your first college, but that is no longer the way things are done, and there is an answer in the Common Application FAQ (I’d link if they made convenient, which they don’t) explaining how to store updated submissions to send to subsequent colleges.

I babysit occasionally for a family friend. I usually babysit once every month or two. I’ve been doing this for about 1 1/2 yrs. Would this go under extracurriculars or work experience? Yes, I am getting paid, but it’s not regular enough, in my opinion, to be considered a real job. Any help would be great!
Thanks!

I think a lot of people babysit, and not everyone reports it, especially if it doesn’t take up a lot of their time. If I were to report it though, I would put it under work experience.

omg, common app out tomorrow! or in one hour by east coast time.
too bad, I won’t be able to see it until later. :(

Hey, does anyone know how to save the changes made on the Common App? My browser warns me when I open it that all changes made cannot be saved…so how do i get around this??

Thanks
