bobert i think the problem with thomas, david, and jacob is that these names are so common nowadays that the subtle allusion wouldn’t work…try to pick a more unusual name, but do avoid gimmicks

Jude, now somewhat of a “common” English name, might work as it alludes to Judas. You could use Jake, in the same way, as an allusion to Jacob, although I don’t think most people associate a negative connotation to Jacob, as they do to Judas.

Yeah, but Jude (as opposed to Judas) is the purported author of a book in the NT canon – not sure how negative it is.

david and thomas seem much more common than jacob to me. personally i have never met one or even [remembered] read[ing] someone named jacob.

I dont think Jacob would work because he is one of the three fathers of judaism. So ultimately he won much favor in the eyes of god and essentially his trickery helped establish the jewish nation. However moses wasnt allowed to enter the land of israel so that would work well i think.

o and jacob (yakov) in hebrew doesnt mean liar or cheater it mean from the heel or something to do with heel

Nimrod is sort of the opposite of what you are looking for. He was an okay guy in the Bible - a mightly hunter, and for a long time someone who was a hunter might be (slightly comically) called a nimrod. But in recent years calling someone a nimrod has become a way of calling them stupid.

Wow, ya think it’s a regional thing, marite? We have an awfully lot of Jacobs around here.

Well, he’s in D.C. which is not that far from NE! It seems like every other friend of my Ss is named Jake :)

How about Isaac - means “laughter.”

Saul. It’s not a popular name, but negative OT ( King Saul) and NT(Paul “before the road to Damascus” ) connotations are quiet clear.
