Communications: UCLA, UCSD, UCB or CSUF

All the UCs’ Communication majors are theory-based and I would venture to say UCB’s Media Studies is slightly more theory-based, based on course subject listings, and the general ambiance of Berkeley. I minored in Media Studies (formerly mass comm) back in the civil war era, and it was heavily theory.

UCLA’s communications is usually considered the best, but curiously UCB’s ranked world-wide as #1, with UCLA number 4 or so. (I’m stating this from memory, so could be wrong - I will look for link.). I have heard mixed reviews on UCSD, some love it, while others are a bit disappointed with UCSD’s department, but that is anecdotal, and could simply be that UCSD is a bit less social than the other campuses. UCD also appears to have a limited dept and less opportunity for internships. For my money, you can’t beat UCLA’s Comm Studies. But they are all good, so you should definitely factor in your preferred campus. Also, UCLA’s dept is known to be super-competitive (dare I say cut-throat, sometimes), so if you are uncomfortable with that you may with to choose another campus.
